How do you make up "sacred geometry" with magic and stuff but somehow it's more boring and less fantastic and strange than real geometry?

@futurebird sacred geometry involves a lot of pi 🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧

Achocha “Fat baby,” Cyclanthera brachystachya

Vines only set fruit when the temps go down in fall. Eaten raw when young, they taste mostly like cucumber and hint of baby peas but less watery. Mature, needs cooking.

Not sure about regrowing. The cucumbers are done so it’s convenient timing for this veg. I would plant it somewhere where the roots could go deeper as they struggled in the portable raised beds.

I'm just going to post here searching for signs of life. Any tips appreciated. So far it feels a little lonely. Help me understand otherwise?

jblue,
@jblue@mastodon.world avatar

@CGraeber check out @feditips

for starters, follow hashtags of things you are interested in and follow a lot of people.

Fill in your profile and make a small introduction post and pin it to the top of your feed. Be sure to hashtag liberally for visibility.

Also check out third party apps like ice cubes (🍎) and Tusky (🤖). They have more features and load faster than the official app. :blobcatheart:

The new "Save the Children" Convoy camp is currently under construction in Saint Isidore, Ontario. Convoy organizers are billing it as a permanent, year-round “community” and boast that it will be “warm in the winter” with its own ”kitchen.”

Wait...so these "Trudeau is an evil communists" gobbers are starting their own commune?

Farmers’ market has Arkansas black.

Very hard, crisp apple, low sugar but still sweet. Also citrusy as if you watered down an orange. It has backend floral notes of jasmine and honeysuckle. But then… smokiness, like smoked apple…

Is this bc of the wildfires this summer?? They were grown in PA.

Cultivar is resistant to cedar-apple rust, fire blight, scab, hot summers and can grow in zone 9 so I’m interested in growing it.

These are rescued river birch seedlings I found growing in pots with my tropical trees. The two mature trees near our house died from salt water creep and high winds exposure besides being almost 30yo. Those trees were home to Prometheus and Luna moth caterpillars, fed and housed multiple birds.

Not sure where to plant these next spring.

The Case for Domesticated Ants:

Domesticated bees are useful. They pollinate crops & produce honey. But, what could domesticated ants do?

Ants are stronger than bees & come in a wide range of sizes. They can be kept healthy on an inexpensive a diet of feeder insects & plant sugars. Ants are fastidious & pay attention to details. 1/

@futurebird would be nice to teach them to push a button to water my plants when they get dry.

I have small colonies of ants that live in my ice-cream bean trees, jackfruit and achacha tree. The ice-cream and achacha produce a sweet sap that the ants feed on and those ants protect the plant from aphids and thrips. I don’t know if they benefit the jackfruit, but they like living there.

Strongly recommend this book.

Author clearly explains how private equity firms are destroying essential industries, how they avoid legal responsibility for the disastrous consequences, who’s empowering them and how they can be stopped.

Private equity’s is to blame for much of the worst aspects of health care, housing crisis, the economy as well as the deepening wealth gap.

@callmeray @bookstodon in the book, he tells about a small private equity firm that used its own funds to reopen and improve a sawmill that in turn revived a dying town. It’s the largest ones that routinely abuse/exploit. The author lists in part 3 of the book what people, federal agencies and local govt can do to rein in the worst excesses and abuses since congress is so far inept. ❤️

@randahl mastodon.social is known to have poor moderation. Other instances are considerably better if you would prefer a safer environment.

Canna flaccida, canna lily

Young seed pods while still green are edible. They taste a bit like green peas. You don’t get much produce though. Roots can be dried, ground and used like arrowroot or kuzu.

scientist, to mastodon

People of or the that live in the , what forms of social gatherings are there for scientists and laypeople alike, who are interested in sustainable development?

I'm thinking of offline social gatherings of like-minded people who regularly think about ecological (environmental) sustainability within an evidence-based framework.

jblue,
@jblue@mastodon.world avatar

@scientist do you know pint of science? Maybe they would be willing to host something.

jblue,
@jblue@mastodon.world avatar

@scientist maybe also talk to @pvonhellermannn She chairs events around culture and climate change hosted by Goldsmiths U (is this right Pauline?)

As for making things go mainstream and involving the community, having festivals with live music/demonstrations/skits and film screenings tends to bring people out in numbers. Ask local businesses to contribute towards food/drinks/kiddie games/competitions. Ppl can try meat/dairy alternatives instead of ignoring it.
