🆕 blog! “Review: Framework 16 Laptop”
★★★★⯪

Several years ago, I purchased a Clevo N151CU laptop with the idea that I'd gradually upgrade the RAM, storage, and other bits. After my keyboard failed, I found it difficult to find replacement parts. The whole point of the Framework laptop is that it is specifically designed to be modular. It come in kit form, […]

This is Redox OS (@redox), a Rust and micro-kernel based operating system that I created, running three COSMIC DE apps (with only Rust dependencies) that I authored. Even the C library, relibc, is written in Rust.

Are we OS yet?

truly are the new lock in for password managers. I'm trying to be a good citizen and use passkeys wherever I can, but now I can't properly try other password managers without needing to create dozens of new keys. I'm trying Proton Pass now, and it's a major pain.

Extrapolate this out to a world where passkeys are the norm and effectively all of my accounts authenticate this way, and moving your data becomes impossible. :dumpster:

It just clicked in my brain. What I haven't been able to articulate about why I'm so anxious about Recall. I'm sure others have already gotten to where I am.

It's worse than "a system that tracks everything you do" and stores that info in a basic database that could be easily compromised.
It's worse than a nanny surveillance tool for companies to spy on their employees.

It's inescapable.

It doesn't matter if I make a dozen "how to disable recall" tutorials. The second YOUR data shows up on someone ELSE'S screen, it's in THEIR recall database.

It won't matter if you're a master expert specialist. You can't account for EVERY other computer you've ever interacted with. If a family member looks up an old email with your personal data in it, your data is now at risk.

If THEIR system is compromised YOUR data is at risk.

I just went from "vague feeling of unease" to "actively writing templates to canvas elected officials, regulators, and attorneys general."

Like other tech giants Google is adding fancy hot AI to all its products.

But you know what would blow my mind? Plain old boring engineering such as viewing the full photo metadata in Google Photos and seamless Docker support on ChromeOS.

My friend made https://amtrack.live/ and it's neat!

If you take Amtrak and want info on train status/delays, it's annoying that the official Amtrak website is slow to load & doesn't have train status perma-URLs to bookmark/share. https://railrat.net/ is pretty good but has ads. amtrack.live is faster & has no ads.

Weekend discovery. An intermediate step in the RAG process is document chunking. Determining the appropriate chunk size can become a trial & error game. James Briggs does a great job of explaining how to use Semantic Chunking to get better results.

It’s so weird.
Joe Biden hasn’t tweeted about Hunter’s trial being a hoax once today. He hasn’t called it rigged or unfair.
He hasn’t even attacked the judge.
It’s almost as if he’s a reasonable, responsible adult letting the case play out without interference because we’re a nation of laws or something.

The post starts by commenting some remarks by Alan Kay on browser architecture and goes from there, discussing the work of other pioneers and their own comments. It covers display PostScript and other interesting system design ideas.

Retro Dodo sad state of affairs

So Retro Dodo has come out and said what we already understand.

Essentially Google's algorithm has become more aggressive & favours big companies & payed ads more than they care about the content.

I have seriously started to wonder what can be done about this.

Nirav's #1 is making these laptops the best for - New meteor lake, and the new display looks great, 120hz with VRR.

They purposely picked 2880x1920 so that Linux users can avoid fractional scaling entirely.

Can retrofit it onto existing 13's too! I'm totally getting the display because of the rounded corners. Ximian lives!

Oh damn, the folks over at Ship of Harkinian are back with a PC-native port of Majora’s Mask.

I haven’t played it yet, but given the remarkable quality of their Ocarina of Time port, I’m pretty confident in saying this will be amazing too.

(Yes it does work on macOS)

(You do need to bring your own ROM, this includes zero Nintendo assets)
