BitMover's closed-source product, BitKeeper, was used for source control for the kernel. Larry McVoy, CEO of BitMover, was upset because someone tried to figure out how the BitKeeper worked and he pulled the BitKeeper licenses from Linux developers.

Needing distributed source control, Linus Torvalds created in a couple of months.

BitMover is gone and BitKeeper is now open-source, gathering dust, in a git repository.

If you really want to be scared about AI, it's not that it's taking away the jobs (which it is), it's that it's being heavily pushed by Accelerationists. Many of them cite Nick Land, a British philosopher who argues for eugenics, "hyper-racism," and authoritarianism.

There are also tons of accelerationist neo-Nazi groups around the world.

These groups assume everything is failing and we need to accelerate the collapse and get it over with.

And they love AI. Scary rabbit-hole to go down.

For added fun, read about how many billionaires such a Zuckerberg and Thiel who are building, or trying to build, massive compounds to ride out the collapse.

Zuckerberg's is in Hawaii and Thiel is trying to do New Zealand (the latter of which is apparently very popular with this crowd).

They're a bunch of white, billionaire little boys with fantasies of being the king of the Mad Max apocalypse.

Some have openly worried about how they keep their guards in check after the collapse.

Apollo App for shutting down today.

Interestingly, Reddit accused the creator of "threatening" them ("Pay me $10 million to go away quietly.")

Not only did he did no such thing, but he lives in Canada which is has one-party consent for recording phone calls. The developer recorded his calls with Reddit and they tell a far different story from what Reddit is claiming.

Still love the struggling client who explained they picked their database because they misread the documentation.

Our company still goes into clients who are considering and it turns out it's because they don't know how to use a . Denormalized, no foreign keys, 20 indexes on a table that needs one, and so on. So they decide to trade a known set of problems for an unknown set of problems. It often ends poorly.

PS: we can fix this for you.

Thibault, the creator the lichess web site, has in his github bio (https://github.com/ornicar): "Maker of lichess.org, a hippie communist chess server for drug fueled atheists."

I find that grossly offensive and disrespectful to the chess community. "Drug-fueled" is a compound adjective and, as such, should be hyphenated.

How backend developers, like myself, see software development.

After working for scores of clients over my career as a consultant sorting out software issues, I know that the frontend is often as bad as the backend, but no one wants to admit it because the end result looks pretty.

Due to rising costs, my surgeon is now charging me 500€ for my surgery. That's if I don't have a « mutuelle » (insurance). If I have one, there is no out-of-pocket cost. The monthly cost of the mutuelle is 30€ to 100€ a month.

The same surgery in the US costs around $20,000 without insurance. With it, you have co-pays, deductibles, partial coverage and potentially uncovered procedures.

I will pay less without insurance in than with in the .

Stumbled across the name "Baldur's Gate" and that certainly brought back memories. Then I found out they're releasing a new version and one of the races you can play is Githyanki. https://baldursgate3.wiki.fextralife.com/Githyanki

I only mention that because those were created by none other than Charlie Stross.

Surely I can't be the only person whose first reaction to seeing a company is named "Hugging Face" is to wonder if they sell Alien xenomorphs bloodily bursting out of human abdominal cavities as a service?

I mean, what were the founders THINKING?!?

@cstross I've heard they did it because they thought "hugging" sounded friendly and human. They're a French company, so I guesss this was a case of not having heard the "facehugger" reference.
