It still gets me the Bible Jesus is a homeless socialist with brown skin, hangs out with 12 dudes and a Prostitute, tells rich people to pay their taxes and give their wealth to the poor, tells the religious leaders that they need to love everyone equally, gets a whip and goes hog on people using religion to sell stuff, and then straight up gets murdered for these beliefs. Yet somehow churches act like he's some kind of Conservative Haircut in khakis and a button up, who would support cutting welfare programs, and would preach Prosperity Gospel.

paulschoe,
@paulschoe@mastodon.world avatar

This Religious Leader about why he left the Southern Baptist Convention:

"After pastors quote the Sermon on the Mount, such as “turn the other cheek,”, afterwards people would ask, “Where did you get those liberal talking points?”

When the pastor answers, ‘I’m quoting Jesus Christ,’ the response would be, ‘Yes, but that doesn’t work anymore. That’s weak,’”

When the teachings of Jesus are seen as subversive, then we’re in a crisis.”

Both believers and non-believers usually take the Bible too literally.

Every book in the Bible was written to give a message.

Just as is done now by leaders and teachers, you give a message in the language, and with the examples, that the people around you understand.

To understand the messages in the Bible, you must not take the Bible literally, but relate the text to when it happened. The context.

It is the message that counts, not the text.

The rot in the court is a feature of the Federalist Society, not a bug. As long as there is a pipeline for FedSoc to put right wing activists into the court, you'll have this corruption.

One of the problems with Trump is that his Administration was so corrupt and there were so many mishaps, that we forget a lot.

In light of Republicans not wanting to help Ukraine fight one of the USA's main adversaries, this is worth remembering:

Back before the Reagan Revolution … a third of America had a good union job, our schools were brand-new and well supplied and staffed, college was free, healthcare was inexpensive, and the biggest challenge America had was to put a man on the moon and bring him safely home — there was little demand for a dictator in this country.
… For the majority of white Americans to adopt a strongman authoritarian, first the country had to be broken and broken badly.

To get people to vote for a dictator, you first have to remove the benefits that a good government offers.

I have always been interested in how Hitler came to power. Then happened. Like the German guy, Trump failed the first time, but the trend was clear: Republicans followed him in mass.

Now, Republican politicians have made the next step.

is formed by its separation of powers. Politicians make laws, and an independent judiciary enforces them.

House Speaker Johnson and others passed that line this week, feeling entitled to intervene in a criminal case.

Each page yesterday took him just a little more than a minute, so this will take >30 mins.

Between that & the testimony readbacks, also expected to take >30 mins, there will likely be >1 hour this morning w/the jury in the courtroom, not actively deliberating.

The best ways to support Mastodon for the average tooter?

  1. Favourite toots that you like.
Showing appreciation will result in more quality toots.

  2. Pay something to the Administrator of your Mastodon instance.

With the growth of Mastodon, their costs go up: hosting, traffic, moderation.

Even 1 or 2 dollars or Euros per month already provide significant help to cover their monthly expenses. Together we can make sure that they don't have to pay it out of their own pocket.
