Some of this will mainly make sense to indie authors, but my publisher got a BookBub deal for Something Deadly on Desert Drive. I went from fewer than fifty ratings to 150 in a week! And I basically retained my star rating. I also hit at least #2 in free Cozy Mystery and #2 in free Women Sleuths in the Kindle Store. (I wasn't checking constantly.) Now if only those new readers will go on to read the rest of the series ....

Two African Fish Eagles sit together to survey their world. The larger, stockier bird on the lower branch is the female. The slighter bird sitting protectively above her & turned to regard the viewer is the male.

Note: When zooming in hard on this photograph, I can see that the male has lost his right eye, but it doesn't seem to be slowing him down any.

neighbor who used to fly the pro-lynching flag put up the RFK Jr. lawn sign so that tells you the kind of person who supports that guy-- they're not "independents" or disgruntled Dems, they're virus-spreading white supremacists

all flags & signs in our neighborhood came down a few weeks ago, from the friendly pro library & rainbow flags to the hate stuff like the last die-hard Trump/Pence sign with Pence whited out but i guess now the haters are creeping back...

A state rep got caught committing securities fraud. A grand jury indicted him on felony charges. Years passed. The defendant was elected attorney general. Years more passed.

Now he has agreed to accept punishment. He must pay nearly $300,000 in restitution, take legal ethics classes and perform 100 hours of community service.

And he remains attorney general.

Timeline blowing up today with the news of #Canva puchasing #Affinity. Posts are pouring in, written in SO many languages. ALL of them worrying about yet another good software suite falling victim to #enshittification and a license model moving from perpetual to monthly subscription.

Users universally loathe subs and we have all seen this story play out before. Nobody trusting the "no changes planned at this time" message.

A sad state of affairs when we all now EXPECT to be worse off shortly.

Absolutely horrible to wake up to the news of the Francis Key Scott Bridge collapsing from what looks like a faulty cargo boat. We are safe, we live north of all that, but absolutely devastating for the people on that bridge when it happened.

Something similar happened in my home town of Tampa in the 80s. Horrible and so scary.

yeah we had a run of these things in the late 20th century on the Gulf Coast, the Seeber bridge in New Orleans stands out in memory because it was close but the one in Mobile w/ the Amtrak train involvement was particularly horrific

just looked it up, both of those were in 1993 so that was not a good year to linger too long on bridges on the Gulf Coast

my heart really goes out to Baltimore today

@bookstodon I am consistently drawn to the most obscure books, by tiny defunct indie publishers.

Luckily, Universities are the best places to find them. Through Interlibrary Loan, I finally found a book which cannot be bought anywhere, but which can be borrowed.

Neil Gaiman ( @neilhimself when he's posting here - which isn't often) is one of my favorite authors, and I'm usually in awe of just about everything he does. It was a cinch, then, that I picked up Unnatural Creatures, an arrangement of short stories that he picked out. So far, all of the stories are good. Surprisingly, I would say that Gaiman's own contribution is the weakest of the bunch, but still entertaining. @bookstodon

the green transition would have already occurred if it was within the power of the working class giving up everything because we mostly already have in the US-- all that savings of fuel & more has gone into AI, crypto, rich people space programs, etc

Tucked deep into Project 2025 is a call to “make Medicare Advantage the default enrollment option.”

This would be a historic handout to the insurance industry.

Medicare Advantage for all will kill people, private plans profit by denying care

old people are a high-risk category, nature didn't plan for you to live to be 65+, you need medical technology

private plans like Med Adv allow insurers to get between you & the doctor & treatment options (just any private insurance does) to deny claims

traditional Medicare allows you to see any doctor in the US who takes Medicare patients & to get expensive conditions treated if need be
