Christianity does not have the right to decide for everyone else what is acceptable clothing, social or sexual relationships, culture, beliefs, or lifestyle.

Christianity only has the right to tell their own cult members what to do or not do.

Legislating religious beliefs is unconstitutional, period.

Legislating christian religious beliefs about abortion, lgbtq, women's rights, or anything else is a violation of my 1st amendment right to freedom of religious practice.

It is also a violation of the UN Charter of Human Rights - especially prohibitions against forced pregnancy.

No theocracy in America.

It's not about Biden, it's about not being forced to live in a taliban style afghanistan of our own, manifesting in the form of a MAGA & QAnon controlled US govt.

A future America where women have no rights. Where women are livestock. Where every bit of their flimsy education tells girls they must be sold off by their parents in marriage (as young as 10* years old, since republicans oppose child bride laws) and forced to give birth against their will over & over until they die, as required by law.

No career, no skills.

Where women's only way out is to commit suicide, since divorce and independence are illegal.

We have less than a year now before we will have voted either to support the legal framework that says religions can't impose their beliefs on people who are not members of their cult, or we will be in the position to have to wage war against a white-nationalist christo-fascist govt.

That's where we are, class, whether you want to be or not.

It is now illegal in Kentucky to expose the illegal treatment or processing of animals.

When exposing crime is punished, you are governed by criminals.

To clear up some confusion, the red legislature passed this Ag-Gag law, the governor vetoed it, then the legislature overturned the veto, with a few dissenting votes - but not enough to stop the overturn. So the Ag-Gag law is now adopted.

By refusing to tax corporations, and refusing to raise the cap on income that is taxable for Social Security, the republicans are purposefully trying to bankrupt the US.

Corporate taxes should be at least as much as individual income taxes, if not moreso.

And there is absolutely no excuse for cutting social safety net programs when corporations clearly are not paying anywhere near their fair share of taxes. Not even close.

It's a scam.

Hi, all - There is a new book of super photography out, called "Pagan Babies." It's and a fundraising to support a great cause: The Faulkner Morgan Archive, the largest collection of LGBTQ historical artifacts, literature, and materials in the south.

"Pagan Babies, the name adopted by [Robert] Morgan and his band of guerrilla-style street artists, was a natural moniker for this collection, which draws inspiration from art-house movies, Greek mythology, Ovid, Shakespeare, the decadence of Weimar Berlin, punk rock, the Pre-Raphaelites, David Bowie, and—above all—the expressive and ingenious realm of queer Kentucky..."

It's not correct to say, as this author does, that all Abrahamic religions look to the afterlife exclusively, instead of life on earth. We do not reject embodiment. We don't say to ourselves: go ahead, plunder resources, exploit the earth beyond its ability to heal. That's not permitted.

Judaism has always focused on making the present, material life, sanctified. All of it.

In fact, eco-Judaism is original Judaism, not some modern afterthought tacked on by current sentiments. You cannot make your land into a wasteland & call yourself spiritually guided. It violates the very heart of our duties in this corporeal life.

Space is awesome, and I love it. But I have no illusions about a techo-miracle future. We've squandered our resources on disposable junk and poisonous convenience. Our future is here, whether we want it to be or not.

So let's make it a place worth living in. Let's sanctify our daily lives.

Yesterday, during the first holy days of Passover, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Idaho v. United States, a case determining whether states can force hospitals to withhold emergency abortion care from people who could die without it.

This case conflicts directly with Judaism, which not only permits such care, but even requires it to save the life of the pregnant person.

Please read my op-ed in USA Today, published yesterday, on the serious implications of this case for all people who want to be pregnant and the infringement of religious freedom.

These U.S. Cities Have More Parking Lots Than Housing - They paved paradise again and again and again.
by Frank Jacobs, Big Think May 17, 2024

"...On average, about one-fifth of all land in city centers is dedicated to parking. But what’s the actual harm being done by all that parking space? For one, city centers that are more “parkable” become less walkable. In other words, fewer things are casually accessible.

...Americans’ attitude toward driving is changing. The share of high school seniors with a driving license has dropped from 85.3% in 1996 to 71.5% in 2015. The rise of shared, multi-modal, and (soon, they keep promising us) autonomous mobility will further reduce the need for driver’s licenses, individual cars, and massive parking facilities in city centers.

Perhaps it’s time for American cities to become denser, more lived-in, more walkable—and less “parkable.”

It's time for everyone in red states to start filing civil rights complaints against the US. Numerous states have passed laws that directly violate the UN Declaration of Human Rights, including provisions against and Religious Coercion.

It's clear that any supposed "domestic remedies" (ie waiting until the next election and hoping white nationalist christo fascists get voted out) would in fact be "ineffective or unreasonably prolonged" for people who are pregnant now or in lgbtq treatment regimes now, or are in a state where christian beliefs are being legislated in violation of everyone's constitutional right to be free of religious oppression.

I'm watching the livestream of today's eruption in Iceland. It's pitch black, nighttime. I'm not sure if there will be a dawn at that latitude this time of year.

The camera is focused on part of the fissure, apparently on higher ground. Behind the fissue is a lake of lava.

The scene is mesmerizing and beautiful.

It looks like a scene from a documentary about the formation of earth. I have always loved geology, seismology, vulcanology, astronomy and the formation of the galaxy - all that stuff.

We are glad the area was already evacuated and nobody was hurt.

As the camera person zooms in it looks like a forest fire scene at night, smokey and glimmering. They pan across the whole fissure occasionally. It seemed to be longer than when I first started watching.

There's no chatter, just the video feed.

Silent, serene, awesome.

Every now and then I used to do a commentary on a book I was readying over on the dead bird site. I did one on my old instance, which I brought over. I think I'd like to do another one today. I just finished reading How Fascism Works by Jason Stanley. It's the new paperback edition with a new preface, and you can find it here:

https://bookshop.org/p/books/how-fascism-works-the-politics-of-us-and-them-jason-stanley/12073468

If mentioning Hitler annoys you, he does it a lot. But there are other points, too, that I underlined in the book.

Yes, I am one of those heathens that underlines, annotates, stars and exclamation points and even - gasp - dogears page corners of my books. I'm a visual learner. It's how I remember things and can find them later - by recognizing at a glance the pattern of markings on the page I'm looking for.

As always, not everything I underlined is profound or amazing, just things I wanted to think about or remember.

I invite you to think about them with me...

14/?? "Conspiracy theories and fake news replace reasoned debate."

By crippling public schools, republicans have made it so that 54% of the current population cannot read above a 6th grade level. That makes it impossible for them to have reading comprehension that will allow them to understand the real issues - and most of them actually have no desire to read articles or books that involve any heavy intellectual lifting, because their school experience made them hate that sort of thing.

This is perfect for christo-fascists. Rule by memes and lightweight propaganda is far easier to do than to convince and educated population to buy fairy tales and bull malarkey.

"Fascist politics make room for dangerous and false beliefs to take root." If you're not educated enough to know BS when you see it, you'll never push back against it, much less actually work to undermine it, or fight against it.

An ignorant population is an easy population to control. Bread and circuses for the "good" ones.

The Oil Crash Is Coming Sooner Than We Think By Rachel Donald, originally published by Planet: Critical, April 15, 2024

"...Produce smaller, less energy-intensive machines & give people control over the means of their energy production. ...We must think about the time we have left to act & the energy we have at hand to act. Fossil fuels are devastating the earth’s climate & their extraction has devastated...just about everything we could hold dear. ...We need an energy revolution and building the kind of infrastructure we need for a cohesive society will take fuel. ...We should redirect the unfathomably immense quantities of wasted energy that supports the lifestyles of the world’s 1%, who emit as much as the bottom 66% and use our last remaining years of access to build better stuff. Redistributing...would make so much energy available while still reducing overall emissions. ...With it built, we could reduce even more..."

Every last person I've interacted with online about the protests eventually outs themselves as pro-hamas & pro-terrorism and say Jews deserved Oct 7th, either directly or indirectly. No matter how many times I mention the hostages, they side step it. No matter how many pre-Oct 7th photos from Trip Advisor or google street view showing Gaza was a fully functional metropolis with all the modern amenities like gold & jewelry markets, shopping malls, condos, restaurants, high end clothing stores, amusement park, tourist resorts, mega grocery stores, university, etc etc ie - no facts matter. They cling to the hamas propaganda.

No matter how many times you point out that hamas executes lgbtq folks and treats women like property, and that Israel actually gives asylum to lgbtq muslims, or point out Israeli muslims vote, run for office, have all the rights of Jews, etc - it doesn't matter.

They accept the lies and reject the truth. They're as deranged as MAGA & QAnon.

The Flooding Will Come “No Matter What” by Abrahm Lustgarten April 11

The complex, contradictory & heartbreaking process of American climate migration is underway.

"...People have always moved as their environment has changed. But today, the climate is warming faster, and the population is larger, than at any point in history.

As the U.S. gets hotter, its coastal waters rise higher, its wildfires burn larger & its droughts last longer, the notion that humankind can triumph over nature is fading and with it...goes the belief that self-determination & personal preference can be the driving factors in choosing where to live.

...a sweeping change is coming in the shape & location of communities across America, a change that promises to transform the country’s politics, culture & economy.

It has already begun. More Americans are displaced by catastrophic climate-change-driven [disasters] every year..."

Red states like Ky are planning to eliminate income taxes to move to an entirely sales tax system. They plan to tax all goods & services, so presumably your doctor, home care, your bookkeeper, and your contract labor will all have to charge you sales tax on top of their regular co-pays & fees.

Of course, that means the brunt of all taxes will be paid by the low wage working poor, and the rich will not be affected - nor pay any tax on their income. Small biz is screwed.

Of course, this being the GOP in Kentucky, they will no doubt slap sales taxes on Food & Medicine, too, just to make sure they hurt the poor as much as possible.

B/c that's what right wing christians do - hurt the poor, disabled, elderly by depriving them of food, med care, affordable housing, and then criminalizing homelessness for good measure. In the name of their evil god.

This May Day, champion workers' rights by urging your Members of Congress to support the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act.

Ensuring the right to organize and bargain for better wages, benefits, and working conditions is vital for a fair and inclusive economy. But corporate-friendly laws in the United States have reduced worker power. The PRO Act fights back.

Among its provisions, the PRO Act would broaden the scope of workers covered by national fair labor standards and prohibit the replacement or discrimination of workers who participate in strikes. The PRO Act would also establish penalties and injunctive relief against entities that fail to comply with National Labor Relation Board orders. It puts real enforcement power behind workers' rights.

Join me in urging Congress to take action on the PRO Act this May Day.

Seeking eggplant recipe ideas, as I have one limp eggplant in the fridge and 8 eggplants growing in hydroponics (which may produce a massive amount of eggplant).

I do a lazy version of this. I dice up the eggplant and sprinkle it with garlic, onion powder, paprika, and parsley flakes first, then roast in the oven about half an hour. They're not so soggy that way.

I serve this one over lentils and rice:
