For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

Copilot+ Recall has been enabled by default globally in Microsoft Intune managed users, for businesses.

You need to enable DisableAIDataAnalysis to switch it off. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/client-management/manage-recall

firefox will now track your searches by default and you'd have no way of knowing they're doing that unless you look for this random blog post on their website: https://blog.mozilla.org/en/products/firefox/firefox-search-update/

it does look like you can turn it off at least.

A new snapshot 24w14potato appeared, adding an entire new dimension, blocks, mobs, paintings and many more. All of them, poisonous 🥔 themed.

Are poisonous potatoes the best Minecraft food? Who exactly is Potatolord of the Fried Legion? We may or may not learn answers to these questions with this very snapshot.

As usual, check out page covering the snapshot, updated as we learn more at https://minceraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_24w14potato

The "Bold New Visions" very easily win over folks internally at most companies, vs "Fix Broken Shit" which is left at lowest priorities as long as someone can find a way to argue it's not a blocker.

That's how UX debt gets built, and never paid: https://rystorm.com/blog/feature-priority

It’s a shame.

The thing about that people who haven’t been through it often don’t understand is that morale never recovers. The employees who remain will never have the same relationship with that company, bosses or peers.

Watching people you respect pack their stuff and crying on the phone with their spouses is something that never goes away. When I survived a layoff in my 20s I became a “do exactly what the ticket says” person. I stopped suggesting ideas, providing feedback, believing anything a manager told me.

If you are a company considering layoffs, especially a profitable company, you should approach it as “this department will have 100% turnover”. The second I got another job offer I left that company and six months later nobody who had been there at the time of layoffs remained.

I’ve seen that pattern play out multiple times.

Huge yikes.

Kagi is now partnering with Brave to power its search results — and they seem to be dismissing their users’ concerns regarding this partnership with a company that’s notorious for being led by a proud anti gay rights supporter.

Just as I’ve consistently advised against using Brave’s products, I now advise against using Kagi as long as it contributes to a homophobic business.

There can be no neutral politics when it comes to people’s rights and lives.

Wordpress advertises that you can customize the look of email newsletters, but I couldn’t find settings for that — so I wrote support. They replied and said actually, no, there are no settings for that.

But first, their AI Support Bot took a crack at an answer — and absolutely, confidently hallucinated two settings that don’t actually exist. I thought I was losing my mind because they just weren’t there.

That feels worse than just not replying at all, right?

Support tells me, “Wordpress does not provide direct settings” to change these options.
