Strange science facts: In nuclear power, functional nuclear fission reactors were constructed as early as 1942, yet nuclear fusion remains elusive and can only be achieved for short periods. In jazz, on the other hand, jazz fusion was invented in the early 70s, and jazz fission remains purely theoretical even today

I'm sick of justifying ethical behavior in terms of profit. We use phrases like "adding alt-text brings more customers to your site" or "protected bike lanes increase revenue for local businesses."

You should add alt-text descriptions to images because it helps people.

We need to build bike lanes because it makes cities safer and more accessible.

Reduce carbon emissions because it's the right thing to do! Discussing these things in purely economic terms misses the point.

the_q,
@the_q@mastodon.social avatar

@docpop I think some of it is that people feel like they have to say it that way or no one will listen, particularly people in decision making positions.

One of the weirdest modern things to me is this obsession with generations. Maybe I haven't read the right stuff, but you pick up a 19th or 18th century book and they talk about the past, or conflict in families between old and young, but never this weird cohort-antagonism thing?

Could be it's random culture shit, but maybe it's because people have fewer kids, so they don't span generations? Or maybe tech acceleration means cohorts have more differences that are real?

the_q,
@the_q@mastodon.social avatar

@ZachWeinersmith Anything that can be used in a system of conflict and control in order to both create wealth and insure obedience will be used.

The fact that every mainstream news site is now locked behind a paywall is a real boon for the spread of misinformation, because very few right wing sites have paywalls — which means their disinfo and propaganda can spread much more easily. Paywalls are a slow motion disaster.

$153 billion

That’s the number.

President Biden has cancelled $153 billion in student debt for over 4 million borrowers in spite of a GOP Supreme Court and congress trying to hurt Americans along the way

This is a huge win

It’s between a sexual predator with 91 criminal charges or one of the most effective presidents of the modern era

And for some reason it’s a close race.

the_q,
@the_q@mastodon.social avatar

@flexghost Let me preface this with I'm absolutely voting for Biden, but c'mon... "the most effective presidents of the modern era"? The main thing he's good at is allowing corporations to make more and more money at the expense of the people that produce. He's not our friend and he certainly doesn't work for us like he should.

It's easy to mistake being treated less badly when all you've known is bad.

Millennials: At your age in 1970 college was 5% of median salary—Now it’s 44%. A median home was $24K—Now its $417K. The top marginal tax rate was 70%—Now its 37%. You worked hard—and then closed the door behind you.

All it would take for AI to completely collapse is a ruling in the US saying these companies have to licence the content they used to train these tools.

They simply would never reach a sustainable business model if they had to fairly compensate all the people who wrote, drew, edited, sang or just created the content they use.

Simply being forced to respect attribution and licenses would kill them. Will that ruling ever happen? Maybe not. Should it? I think so.

the_q,
@the_q@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP I agree, but I don't think it will happen. The LLMs have all already been trained on stolen data. It's a knot that can't be undone at this point. There will be a lot of hand wringing and yelling, but in the end the corporations and their government lackeys will just hand-wave any grievances and then "promise" not to do it again in the future knowing full well they absolutely will.

In the end we're all to blame though. We clicked "I agree" on every social media platform.

Well, we ended up making an offer on a flat. It’s a duplex on the top floors of an 18 story building, with a parking spot, the main bedroom and bathroom on the top floor, 2 more rooms on the bottom floor, and a nice big sundeck with an amazing view.

In the end, we’d rather have a really cool flat than a « meh » house! It’s on the higher range of our budget, but by the end of the week, we should have confirmation it’s ours, meaning you might see a new studio in 4 months or so!

Easter can happen any day between March 22 and April 25

Next year, Easter will fall on Hitler’s birthday

But for some reason, the GOP wants to be outraged Easter coincides with the International Transgender Day of Visibility

They are calling out the President for somehow moving the internationally recognized day to today

Yet it’s been the same day since 2010

For most people chasing “generational wealth” is a trap. Prioritize personal freedom and present happiness over an ego-driven desire to build a dynasty. Bezos can't buy more time or meaning. The real wealth is in your lived experience.

the_q, (edited )
@the_q@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan I often wonder if "meaning" is just a way to give those at the bottom something unattainable to pursue. A squirrel doesn't need meaning; its existence fits and flows in the natural world. Oh to be a squirrel.
