"Mama, why is he lying down?"
"Well he never really deserved to be standing, he was a rich, bad man who made his money moving people around the world where they were forced to be slaves."
A variety of pretty interesting thoughts in this Peter Beinart podcast (I skimmed transcript):
"among Jewish students who were involved in pro-#Palestine organizing, it is awakening a kind of much greater interest that they had in what it means to be Jewish"
"the more powerful they grow, the more the repression we will see... the US government at state & federal level will start to punish these universities even more severely"
A reprehensible, corrupt pardon,& antithetical to the #1A right to protest: “Gov Abbott’s pardon & its accomplishing rhetoric fits into pattern of sanctioned violence or threatened violence against undesirables. In those case an Air Force vet protesting police brutality-there’s not even a mention of Foster, the victim. The message from Abbott & ppl like him is ominous. Daniel Perry wasn’t the first. Do you really think he’ll be a the last?” #BLM#GOPFascism#GOPRacismhttps://www.motherjones.com/politics/2024/05/abbott-daniel-perry-pardon-protesters-texas/
This is at least partially because of the FBI’s campaign of sabotage against 20th-century Black leaders, which was so ruthlessly effective that it remains near-impossible to separate the truth from deliberate distortions, or sort these threads into any kind of moral coherence.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott granted a full pardon to Daniel Perry, a man convicted of murdering a Black Lives Matter protester in downtown Austin in 2020, after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles unanimously recommended the move. Perry claimed during the trial that he shot Garrett Foster, who was carrying an AK-47 rifle, in self-defense. Prosecutors argued Perry was seeking out the confrontation. Read more from USA Today.
#Republican Gov. Greg Abbott said Thurs he was pardoning #DanielPerry, the fmr Army sergeant convicted in the fatal shooting of a protester during a #BLM march, after a review board recommended he be released from prison.
The Federal Election Commission must investigate whether Donald Trump’s campaign illegally attempted to hide settlement payments by routing the payments through third parties, according to a complaint filed today by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. The allegations of wrongdoing stem from former Trump campaign employee AJ Delgado’s sworn declaration in her pending lawsuit against Trump and his campaign over her claims of pregnancy discrimination...
Remembering when police in North Carolina said “F this” at a #BLM protest and kneeled in solidarity with protestors? Where are these police now for college students?
#Virginia school board restores #Confederate leaders’ names to 2 #schools
The change comes 4 years after the schools had removed the names during the national racial reckoning sparked by #GeorgeFloyd’s killing.
I need you to start using Facebook again-- really. I mean it.
I need you to start sharing information there. Share leftist news. Share real news about #Palestine. Share #BLM posts. Share #Queer & #Trans news and resources. Share #Climate Crisis news. Share increasingly #radical memes and personal takes. Ramp it the fuck up till you're worried your family & friends will think you're absolutely unhinged.
I'm completely serious.
Why? Because older people use it who only get their news from Fox or CNN. Because your centrist friends and conservative family are there. Because you are the last line of hope for them to learn anything about what's really happening, and about things that actually matter. Some of them know you and trust you enough to listen-- not all, but some. They aren't going to read theory or pay attention without a thread or connection to someone else that cares.
They need real connections like you so that these ideas are not abstract.
On Al Jazeera this morning the reporter at George Washington University described the unwillingness of the DC #police to respond to GW administration requests for arrests of nonviolent #FreePalestine protesters.
The reporter added that the cops and the District may be hesitant due to the tens of millions of dollars they had to pay in damages for their crackdown on Black Lives Matter. They don’t want to risk any more lawsuits. #BLM still having an impact.
Someone said American cops think #FreePalestine is #BLM in Arabic and it is, in a way. And America would rather beat teenagers on television than give up its racism.
After the #BLM protests in 2020, a group of #cops (I forget the exact source) said something to the effect of, "it's easy for us to deal with one big #protest, but ten smaller ones across the #city would overwhelm us".
