I wish I knew this already, but I don't: if anyone out there has done a scholarly edition of novel for a publisher, how do you work out the timeline in your proposal? Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

I just got an interesting question about text on menus.

It bothers the questioner when things aren't capitalized on menus or there's no punctuation.

I think they want me to say menus should follow standard English rules, but I've never been able to get worked up about menus. The "errors" or pretentious formatting are all just part of the restaurant experience to me.

What do you think about text styling on menus?

Curious about a style item I saw in a book this week. Would you prefer "Me Too" or "" in reference to the movement?

I'm downloading Descript as I write this. My first intro to text as the interface to audio editing (such a profound and wonderful idea!) was courtesy of Laurian Gridinoc years ago, I've been eagerly awaiting more general availability.

See also https://blog.jonudell.net/2022/09/25/curating-the-studs-terkel-archive/ about remixing the Studs Terkel archive using Laurian's https://hyper.audio/. I wonder if Descript uses the same or a different foundation?

A lot of writing, especially academic writing, is mired in abstraction that can be avoided by finding the real verb. For example:

Discussion of X took place → X was discussed
We carried out measurement of Y → We measured Y
It demonstrates close alignment with Z → It aligns closely with Z

Editing

Tuesday is my normal editing day, but since its my turn to work on Saturday this week, I have Monday afternoon off and I can get some done today. I'm slicing up drone shots of Castle Douglas, which is awesome. Its a beautiful town, with mostly Victorian buildings on the high street, and it's surrounded by beautiful countryside. This week's story is about the Railway coming to CD.

I've started down a copy editing rabbit hole and I'm loving it.

I wanted to remove the word "basically" from any old blog post where it didn't make sense. (you don't "basically, do something" you "do something")

As I was going through I kept on finding other examples of words that could be clipped.

  • essentially
  • probably
  • possibly
  • just
  • you need to
  • trivial

This isn't even the full list!

80% of the time the sentence reads better without further edits

Here’s today’s #writing / #editing tip:

  1. Put long lists at the beginning or end of sentences
  2. Relatedly, keep the subject and verb close together if possible.

A) Various animal species, such as gorillas in Africa, Sumatran tigers in Asia, and California condors in North America, are now critically endangered.

B) Various animal species are now critically endangered, such as gorillas in Africa, Sumatran tigers in Asia, and California condors in North America.

B is way better, right?

A literary anecdote I've always liked is this exchange of telegrams:

Publisher: "NEED 2-PAGE SHORT STORY TWO DAYS."

Mark Twain: "NO CAN DO 2 PAGES TWO DAYS. CAN DO 30 PAGES 2 DAYS. NEED 30 DAYS TO DO 2 PAGES."

One of the most common errors I fix when editing is known as false attraction, a form of subject–verb disagreement

Here's an example of what I mean, in a recent (and well-written) article in The Atlantic: "Research into such conditions are grossly underfunded"

A post on why it happens and some of the forms it takes:

Can we please reconsider the term “bile juice”? In fact, let’s just stop using “juice” for any bodily secretions, kthx

Using a katakana long vowel marker (超音符) ー instead of an en dash – 👀

I had to edit a piece about Mastodon today. Wow, was it clear the writer had never heard of it or used it. The writer thought that Mastodon was called "Mastodon Social," for example. That, or the chatbot they were using did.
