Just realize how much my habits have shifted.

Earlier, I'd open DDG and type in my search query.

These days, I open a query in , duplicate the tab to use '!g' and '!yt' to search and , ask and for ideas to refine my search, also look on and , and I still feel like I might have missed out...

Google is the new Lycos or Altavista. DDG is AskJeeves, I guess.

Time for a new , I guess. Maybe, a mashup/aggregator? 🤔

This page comes up if I search for '"stable diffusion" Radeon linux': /vectorlinux.com/stable-diffusion-radeon/

(https removed to not add to the page's search rank, currently top on DDG).

It's fake, almost certainly machine-generated. It swaps my search keywords into some generic text, e. g. "One of the standout features of the Stable Diffusion Radeon is its impressive processing power."

Is DuckDuckGo hacked?

It's only a single example, but I find it indicative of the results I get using https://kagi.com as my primary .

Out of 4 engines (, , , and ), only Kagi gave me a result that was a review of someone actually using a microphone with a jogging stroller – and it was the top result. The others are basically just a jumble of unrelated microphone and reviews.

Got my family subscription, Kagi. Let's go!

Screenshot of DuckDuckGo search results for “microphone for jogging stroller”. The top results are “Best Running Strollers of 2023” from Runner’s World, images, and “7 Best Jogging Strollers of 2023” from Good Housekeeping.
Screenshot of Google search results for “microphone for jogging stroller”. The top results are “The 3 Best USB Microphones of 2023” from The New York Times (Wirecutter), a bunch of questions”People also ask” about microphones being worth it, and Kidrunner (a hands-free jogging stroller that honestly does look pretty cool but only if you run on flat, perfectly maintained sidewalks, which is not my reality).
Screenshot of Bing search results for “microphone for jogging stroller”. The top results are “Best Running Strollers of 2023” from Runner’s World and a bunch of random info pulled from … maybe that page? It’s unclear. Way at the bottom and continuing “below the fold”, there is the beginning of an “Explore Further” list of more links to “best jogging stroller” listicles.

Today @protonmail had a great explainer (https://mastodon.social/@protonmail/111165171600485248) on the mind bending evil Google is up to with it's new "privacy features". But pretty much every tech company is now in the business of profiling you and monetizing your tidbits.

What can you do? A lot as it turns out, but if you just want ONE EASY THING that you can do today, SWITCH TO FIREFOX (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/) and make DuckDuckGo your default search engine.

For top #privacy and #Security choose a search engine that is not located in the US nor any of the “five eyes” countries.

That means avoid #google #duckduckgo and #mojeek

Try #startpage or #searx
