I have been using since 2004 and do not intend to stop anytime soon. You need to take it out of my dead hands. What about you?

The article's title: What exactly was the point of [ “x$var” = “xval” ]?

Me: "Well, cargo culting for people who don't know how to quote in the shell?"

Turns out: no. There are several good reasons why people did this, and the bugs it's been a workaround for have continued to exist into the 2010s.

If you're somewhat proficient in scripting and/or interested in history, this is an awesome read.

Okay, so. I have a and a file. And I’d like to compare them. And since I’m a programmer, I don’t want to compare them visually, but with a . But how?

Like this.

alias pdfcat='gs -q -sDEVICE=txtwrite -o-'
alias doccat='pandoc -t plain'

pdfcat a.pdf > a.txt
doccat b.docx > b.txt

git diff --no-index --word-diff a.txt b.txt

And since we’re using --word-diff, it doesn’t matter that the two files use wildly different line wrapping.

It's 1979, I have heard of #unix but my university has no machine to run it. Prof says "Moravian College (across town) has a PDP-11 that runs unix, go check it out."

There was no email, students did not have telephones, I just walked into their computer center. They were so thrilled someone was interested they encouraged me to stay and learn.

Oh my God what have we done?

Here's a helpful tip for those using or web servers. Before you hit that reload command, it's always a good idea to test your server config file for syntax errors. You can do this easily as follows:

  • For nginx: nginx -t
  • For lighttpd: lighttpd -t -f lighttpd.conf
  • For apache2: apache2 -t

If you want to check for syntax errors on other Linux/Unix servers, I have compiled a complete list for you https://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/check-unix-linux-configuration-file-for-syntax-errors.html
