Ground Truth is an extended eulogy to a rapidly changing land and population awakening to the realities of climate change, land-use, and pollution. Part natural history, part memoir-in-essays, Ground Truth is a moving portrait of the forces and landscapes that have shaped a region and the people who live there.
Anti-monarchists in the #NorthWest are going to be apoplectic at what the Guardian has uncovered...
The Duchy of Lancaster has been profiting from funds collected from those who die without a will or next of kin.... running at about £6m a year for the last decade.
I know a lot of people who will be getting ready to get really mad about this (and rightly so).
Get that will sorted, is the best advice to anti-Royalists!
Hurrah... good sense breaks out in the #NorthWest as the 'Waitrose of the North', Booths begins to get rid of self-service check-outs.
Given the price premium at Booths, we (the customers) want the social interaction with staff at the checkouts, not be told to 'scan & bag'!
More importantly, not only do checkouts provide regular local employment, they are also for many semi-isolated shoppers a key bit of rare social interaction... so a welcome reverse!
I'm not sure I should be celebrating, but according to #OfWat, the #NorthWest's #water utility have done well enough on their service targets, to raise their prices unlike almost all the others who have been required to return money to consumers via lower bill due to badly underperforming.... Oh well
Of all the #plantFoods consumed by the peoples of the #Northwest Coast, none was more important than the tasty bulbs of the flowering plant known as #BlueCamas . Among the #CoastSalish of #VancouverIsland it was the principal source of carbohydrates in a fat- and protein-heavy diet. #Ethnobotanists estimate a single family might have gathered 10 thousand bulbs in a season, and as many as 10 million were harvested on the island every year.
Apropos of nothing, #UnitedUtilities are fucking scumbags. Makes a change from them pumping sewage into streams and onto beaches, mind you.
"United Utilities fined £800,000 after illegally abstracting 22 billion litres of #Water in #Lancashire
"It caused a significant decline in the #Fylde#Aquifer, which is an important public #WaterSupply for residents in the #NorthWest and also helps the flows of local #Rivers..."
The two-week change map shows degradations extending from the #Southwest to the #Southeast, as well as the #Northwest and north-central regions. The #Midwest and High Plains areas continue to see some improvements.
The 4-week change map highlights improvement in central and eastern states but degradation from #Wisconsin to the #Northwest and from #Louisiana to #Arizona. The 1-week map shows the most recent changes.
