Any nerds out there know whether it’s possible to find an adapter to replace this tiny drive with something more useful?
I’m pondering this tiny Dell PC as a home server, but it only has USB 2. So I’m wondering whether I could run an adapter cable to a socket outside the case into which I can plug something with a usable capacity.
As far as I can tell it’s a 44 pin IDE DOM, but not much appears to work with it.
I got my new CPU and RAM, so now I just have to do a full suite of benchmarks before opening up my PC and swapping them out, and then running all the benchmarks again to quantify how much juice I've added!
I decided to go a little more conservative: 5900x and 64GB of 3600Mhz memory. Half the price and still well over twice the specs of my current build. Finally gonna put that nice cooler I bought to work! This'll be my fourth thermal paste change on this PC. Getting my money's worth out of that x570 board!
Y’all, I cannot express how frustrating it has been trying to get Ubuntu installed but it is finally done. I had to update the BIOS and fiddle with USB settings in order to get the usb drive to actually work.
With that being said, she may not look like much, but she’s got it where it counts (I hope). I would like to spruce this case up a bit and get optical drive and floppy drives. Maybe add some more fans too. I like the retro vibes though.
the new GPU is very large. friend suggested that I need a new case. it sits directly on the PSU, covering half a fan on the GPU. but the PSU is closed on the top, so no air flow there.
I see how this is not ideal, but on the other hand the PSU is holding the massive and super heavy GPU up and the GPU pulls air from inside out anyway.
I just wanna skimp out on a new case, but if friend says I need one, then I guess I need one.
Hey, fellow nerds of Mastodon! I need to get a pc tool kit so I can open up my computer and resit the fan (I’m pretty sure it got jolted slightly out of place during a random little quake), and so I can do a few upgrades in the future. Any recommendations for a beginner set of PC building tools, that won’t be too expensive? #pcgaming#pc#pcbuilding
I am a "basic bitch" kind of user. A total noob. I've used Windows all my life and have a desktop PC. I once helped a friend build his own PC years ago and thought that was awesome so now I want to build my own.
I don't have anyone to help me so it would be a solo learning process. Where can I learn about this stuff?
Usually in Windows to test whether your CPU is being thermally throttled you’ll run cinebench and then slowly decrease the cpu voltage in BIOS until you reach the best score.
How do you do that in Linux? What software do you use instead?
next milestone in the saga of this move: my #PC is officially unpacked, plugged in, and fully functional. still have to set up a few more odds and ends to make my home office feel “homey” again, but this is a great first step.
update: o’malley is helping me set up my home office, and we are both watching #drawfee. he is… not particularly helpful. but his company is always appreciated.
Everything we know about the universe results from a harmony of hardware and imagination. 🌌 🖥️ On Day 10, we'll bring this pairing to PC builders in the form of a product that unleashes a universe of possibilities. Brace yourself...for nebula! 🚀 👩🚀 #PCBuilding#10DaysOfNebula
I know this is always a longshot but since a lot of you are Tech People and probably a lot of you spend a lot of time digging around stuff for sale, if anyone at any point sees one of these old Lian Li PC-U6 (Cowry) cases for sale, please light the bat signal for me because I have been trying to find one of these for quite a while. I didn't have the money for one when they were new ten thousand years ago and finding one in the modern day has not been easy. Maybe if I post about it enough eventually someone will see one somewhere and go "wait, someone was looking for one of those". Then not be able to find my post again probably. But y'know.
Me staring at other people's setups: "That cable management is atrocious! It's so bad!"
Me handling my own setup: "Cable management? Hehe... We don't talk about that. As long as it's physically possible to get that side panel on the case, I'll call that cable managed."
Guess it's time for an #introduction ! Better late than never, huh?

Looking forward to sharing my hobbies and seeing some of yours!
Is the Thermaltake The Tower 500 max GPU size EXACTLY 355 mm like their website say (without psu cover) or is there a tolerance? Would a 355,5 mm GPU fit?
The GALAX RTX EX Gamer Pink looks SO GOOD but it’s only for the 4070 and 4070Ti (and the 4070Ti one isn’t even available in Brazil, only the 4070 one is).
May we please have a Pink 4080? (and make it available in Brazil) 🥺
(maybe a 4090 too if it goes on sale for a good price, but at least a 4080 pleeeease)
