#RedditBlackout organizers aren't fooling around and many have shifted into full on scortched earth on Reddit and to #RedditMigration mode:

Another update and possibly a solution for some case where posts were not properly deleted. There is a limitation in Powerdelete. Here is a link to a new version and alternatives:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/145fico/comment/jnl4xmr/

The restores could also be rollbacks from the server issues or post haven't been properly deleted due to subs being private during blackouts.

Many have experienced the same issue, there is a discussion here on kbin:

Day 9 of the protests...

/r/horny is now a Christian Minecraft server

/r/iPhone is only posting pics of Tim Cook looking dashing

NSFW sub r/NoFans is only posting fanless PC coolers

17 subs are devoted to content including:

First they came for /r/pics ... now Reddit are coming for the individual personal subreddits

Quite some years ago I'd realised that amongst the problems with using Reddit as a personal blogging space (my avatar here is a relic of that, if you'd not put the two together) was that I do not in fact have any permanent claim to that space.

Reddit's previous policies of moderator re-assignment bothered me. The policies apparently instituted September 2022 and being rolled out aggressively in recent days ... have not weakened my concerns.

And, checking in now, I find a day-old modmail to /r/dredmorbius, a subreddit which only ever was my own personal posts with comments from a few friends, and about 1,000 subscribers ... has received a notice to reclaim by /u/Modcodeofconduct, screenshot attached here.

I have not abandoned the sub. I had closed it in protest of Reddit's continued failings and war against its volunteer moderators and general community.

And I will not go quietly.

In light of the recent #redditblackout , it seems appropriate to repost the fantastic @catvalente essay:

Stop Talking to Each Other and Start Buying Things: Three Decades of Survival in the Desert of Social Media

https://catvalente.substack.com/p/stop-talking-to-each-other-and-start

I’m so tired of just harmlessly getting together with other weird geeks and going to what amounts to a digital pub after work and waking up one day to find every pint poisoned. Over and over again. Like the poison wants us specifically. Like it knows we will always make its favorite food: vulnerability, connection, difference. I’m so tired of lunch photos and fanfic and stupid jokes and keeping in touch with family across time zones and making friends and starting cottage industries and pursuing hobbies and meeting soulmates and expressing thoughts and creating identities and loving TV shows and reading books and getting to know a few of your heroes and raising kids and making bookshelves and knitting and painting and fixing sinks and first dates and homemade jam and, yes, figuring out what Buffy characters we are, listening and learning and hoping and just fucking talking to each other weaponized against us. Having our enthusiasm over the smallest joys of everyday life invaded by people who long ago forgot their value and turned into fodder for the death of thought, the burial of love.

These were our spaces, little people who just wanted to connect. And one by one, they get turned into battlefields where we have to fight just as hard to exist as we do in the real world. And every time a few more people you never thought the Absorbaloff of hatred and gleeful sadism would slurp up don’t come along to the next safe place, and start trying to take it away before anyone can get there.

Well everyone, it's the first week in July, and CEO Steve Huffman is still a lying asshat who treats Redditors as voiceless resources to exploit. So, as promised, I'm off Reddit and out of r/zfs for good.

The good news is, Practical ZFS is up and running as a replacement, with more than 100 registrations in its first day online and more continuing to come in. I hope to see you there soon!

A few days ago I made some predictions about the #Threadiverse and #RedditBlackout:
https://szmer.info/post/349217

tl;dr:

  • soon media will discover Lemmy exists
  • they will miss Kbin exists
  • once they eventually notice it, they will be befuddled about it; Kbin will get called a "fork" of Lemmy at some point.
  • more Threadiverse instances will start turning off registrations to deal with the deluge of people joining
  • media will call this "elitist" (as opposed to BlueSky or ClubHouse being…

THIS is why the #redditblackout must remain in place for longer than 48-hours. Huffman knows it’ll “blow over” after today because it has a planned end time. I’m glad many subs decided to blackout indefinitely. If mods stay strong, it “won’t pass” because Reddit will be forced to boot all mods and replace them with their own paid mods, which they absolutely don’t have the manpower to do.

I'm not sure if this is a recent development, but since I deleted the reddit app I hadn't run across this before.

Not just the "download our app" but the inability to view content on reddit from a mobile browser!

The content is accessible in a desktop browser. (I always prefer a desktop to mobile device for browser when possible.)

Let this be a reminder, the enshitified sites have a lot of power over access to the data we've given them.

It seems like is really trying to shut down the now. They are now actively removing ENTIRE mod teams where there communities posted content on subreddits where the moderators allowed it.

Reddit is clearly of the opinion that moderators are no longer the masters of their subreddits and can be removed without any real wrongdoing.

I don't know if anyone has seen this blog post on Reddit:

https://www.redditinc.com/blog/investing-in-what-makes-reddit-unique-introducing-contextual-keyword-targeting-and-product-ads

It seems to me that Reddit is trying to heavily pivot to being an advertising platform, like Facebook and Google. It sort of makes sense, even though it seems to be the worst time for such a move (GDPR cookie law, Apple and Google and their "privacy labels", etc)

If this is the reason why they are killing off third party apps (now that they've stopped pretending they are), then it makes sense. They want to kill off third party apps to get people using their app so they can harvest data from them and then advertise heavily.

It also makes sense why their mobile website, despite visually being far better optimised for mobile viewing (unlike old.reddit.com), is so artificially broken and constantly asking users to download their app (if I had to guess, the app is easier to collect data as the native app has more "signals" than the browser version).

It also explains why they are implementing this change so quickly and not allowing third party apps to catch up (Reddit has their own app, they know the rules when it comes to IAP, and they know how difficult they are making these changes to third party app developers).

The big question is why all the drama??

  • Why not just shut off APIs for third party apps, full stop??
Why constantly make it about the Apollo app when it affects all* third party apps like Reddit is Fun, Sync for Reddit, narwhal for iOS etc??
  • Steve Huffman said before that these apps were using significant API resources and they were "inefficient" (implying lots of users use the app). Now he says that 95% of users use the Reddit app. Which is it????
  • Steve Huffman promised better moderation tools in his AMA. Why not deliver the tools now??
  • Why hasn't the official Reddit app improved its accessibility if Reddit wanted to capture a large audience in the first place (for ads and such - Facebook and Google hammer accessibility down devs skulls)??
  • Why all the lies?? Why change the story all the time???

This whole thing has been a comical shitstorm and could've been avoided had Steve Huffman been honest about the whole situation.

We just granted €3000 to @LemmyDev and €333 to @ernest to support the new who already has hundreds of "subs" and thousands of users.

This grant is part of our engagement with the @copiepublique initiative that gathers companies who pledged to share profits to grant and .

Okey dokey. So, I'm looking at viable to replace what was providing for me* & I'm currently at the initial information overload stage.

My current understanding is that Lemmy is associated with tankies & best avoided, but it's also the most developed option presently.

Kbin seems to me to be more of an upcoming star, but still lacks important features & an app.

What have been others' informed experiences?

Well Reddit Corporate has decided to go full draconian on moderators participating in the #RedditBlackout and #RedditStrike .

There is a clear and obvious threat presented here, for a subreddit of 270 members....

Here's a post quickly recapping the results of Reddit's recent zoom meeting with disability communities, from the point of view of the r/blind mods. It makes for interesting, not to mention embarrassing reading.
For those unused to reddit's layout with a screen reader, just hit H for the first heading, then B for the first button, and hit down arrow a few times until the post starts.
