@wogan, @hnygd What have I learned? 🧵

I should treat not as faceless but as friendly hosts, and not mess up their place! The are obviously essential, but it's easy to cause problems even if I stay inside the rules.

Blocking trolls works well, but in order to protect my followers I need the admins' involvement. So that adds work for a couple of busy people, which isn't kind.

malmorrow,

@wogan @hnygd

Words don't achieve much by themselves.

I thought hard about what I gained from attracting trolls about Pride. I didn't achieve anything much - except this self-examination! The real and useful thing to do is to go to Pride, when it happens, and write about that. That's being a useful to people who matter to me. For that matter, I do useful volunteer work with a organisation, so I must write more about that too. Do first, then write.

A history that excludes anybody is a history that excludes everybody.

Case in point. I grew up near a river. The name of the river was a loanword of a now extinct local first nation language that means battle.
Nobody knows where, when, or who fought the battle.
Not even wild speculation exists about the battle, all because the majority of speakers of that language were systematically hunted down and killed.

What happens when you make that can't afford their own building repairs, compete for funds & then limit the pot available for Govt. funded work (while costs are rising)?

Unsurprisingly the answer is that for this financial year (23/24) less than one in five schools were successful in their bids for repairs!

It cannot be the case that the other four out of five applications are just 'trying it on'... no, our schools are in disrepair & its endangering the pupils.

cont'd!

Can America’s Students Recover What They Lost During the Pandemic?

Disastrous test scores increasingly show how steep a toll the COVID-19 era exacted on students, particularly minorities.

Schools are grappling with how to catch up, and the experience of one city shows how intractable the obstacles are.

Well, it really doesn't mean any of those things. Using AI to 'optimise' care and learning actually means more precaritisation of workers who are already at breaking point and an algorithmic amplification of injustices already present in our social systems. Time to resist AI.

Young Tassie Scientists is a hoot (last year I even got to speak at a science centre and travel to King Island!) and it’s a great way for kids to meet scientists in a casual and friendly environment. We especially like to take our Tasmanian scientists back to their roots, to show students people just like them who became superstars.

A recent report from the U.S. Surgeon General highlights significant risks youth face using social media, including exposure to harmful content, excessive use, mental health risks, cyberbullying, body image issues, sleep problems, and fear of missing out. Despite these risks, the report also emphasizes that social media can have positive effects for some youth, providing positive communities and connections with others who share identities, abilities, and interests. /1 🧵

Book banning in the US is an organized campaign by a small minority.

' The majority of the 1,000-plus book challenges analyzed by The Post were filed by just 11 people.

Each of these people brought 10 or more challenges against books in their school district; one man filed 92 challenges. Together, these serial filers constituted 6% of all book challengers — but were responsible for 60% of all filings. '
