Widespread Deposition In A Coastal Bay Following Three Major 2017 Hurricanes (Irma, Jose, And Maria) [USVI]

A difference map of Coral Bay, St. John, USVI. The post-storm November 2017 survey was subtracted from the pre-storm August 2017 survey. Deposition is indicated by positive values (green, yellow, orange, red); erosion in negative values (blue). The largest area of deposition (outlined with a black dashed line) is characterized by deposition ranging from 20 to 60 cm. Coral mounds in central Johnson Bay have a general flute mark pattern of deposition toward Coral Harbor and erosion to seaward. Six sediment cores (white circles) were collected in November of 2017.

This is cool - the artificial island next to Docklands Library now has a nesting black swan in residence. I anticipate going "Awwww" at too-cute cygnets soon. Possibly followed by running from an aggrieved parent swan (shades of the PG Wodehouse short story, Jeeves and the Impending Doom!).

It rained most of today, so here are more pictures from yesterday, when we actually had some sun. Details with each picture.

Five cormorants paddle in formation in the water. They always remind me of synchronized swimmers, keeping their necks straights and tilting their heads up. Cormorants will migrate south to ice free water for the winter.
Approximately 20 shiny orange and black large milkweed bugs are piled onto a dried milkweed pod that is ready to burst and release its seeds. Some bugs may fly south for the winter to the southern US.

One of my favourite photographs from 2016- this one was taken at Slimbridge Wetland Centre. The swan pictured here is a juvenile, a cygnet, that's why the feathering is grey rather than white.

Warbler season is starting. I spent an hour in the woods taking pictures and I have ONE half-decent photo to show for it. A good warbler picture is something to be proud of.

I saw a mute swan today. It is all white and has an orange beak with black around the eyes and the top of the beak. They generally don't migrate, so this one is probably from around here somewhere.
Ten years ago, I didn't see a single cormorant around here. Now they are everywhere and there are lots of them.
A bird with an olive head, a white eyering and white wingbars. Who is it? Who knows. Best guess is female Magnolia, but probably I am wrong. I am always wrong when it comes to fall warblers.

Good morning! From my new babies (well, they’re not exactly baby plants). I bought the decorative vase ftom a thrift shop by in Chicago last spring for $2. And the echevarrias (2 varieties) and aloe vera from @homedepotfound in Chicago two days ago. The southwestern motif reminds me of when I used to drive to Eloy for immigration interpretation gigs, many years ago. @plants @houseplants
