Some people prefer to talk about the "social web" instead of the "fediverse".

If you do, do you just prefer one term over another, or do you think "social web" could emcompass more functionality than what today's fediverse can do?

Curious.

social.coop, the Mastodon instance that I'm mostly on, is a coop, so users like me get to vote.

An important vote just closed, about whether to federate with Meta's Threads or not.

I don't quite agree with the outcome, but it is something I can live with as a compromise, and I VASTLY PREFER this messy, argumentative, and lengthy (yes!) process of member democracy over any unilateral action by any instance administrator or overlord, even if they are quite benevolent.

Others should emulate.

Something that uses but is as far away from as one could think of?

Why would Meta implement ActivityPub? 1½ reasons are compelling, another is not. Those reasons have consequences.

Blogged. Would love your thoughts.

About half of the Fediverse addresses typed by FediForum attendees into the session notes are missing the leading "@".

People typed in their very own Fediverse handles. And because they came to FediForum, it's very likely they are very well acquainted with the right syntax.

Pretty strong circumstantial evidence that most people won't be able to distinguish Fediverse handles from e-mail addresses.

I have long believed that they should be the same.

At this point Elon Musk is not just an enabler, but a leading instigator.

The suggested follower experience appears to work. I made one single meaningless post right when I created the account, engaged basically with nobody, and I have 49 followers.

What can we learn from that in the ?

"Meta is talking to celebrities like Oprah and the Dalai Lama about being early users. ‘We’ve been hearing from creators and public figures who are interested in having a platform that is sanely run,’ a top exec told employees."

This is how you do marketing, take notice. We need to get our act together, otherwise Meta will be the default marketing department for the Fediverse, and that would be ... suboptimal.

Ouch. The Washington Post has this piece: “Twitter rival rife with child- material, study finds”. The author does not understand the implications of a decentralized network at all (“mastodon did not respond”) but imho that’s on us, not on them: we have not done the work to communicate it.

The needs a team that can react quickly on press like this.

Silly (or maybe not) question:

So what exactly is social media for?

For some, it is a way to sell ads into an addicted audience. But we are trying to get away from that with the . So if it's not that, what is it for, exactly?

And for you personally: if you didn't have social media, what exactly would you miss in your life? Which needs or wants do you have that would be unmet?

I'd love a broad variety of responses. Reshare?

is at 70 million accounts this morning.

At this rate, they eclipse Twitter in mere weeks, and then the network effect turns negative against Twitter. So I expect everybody on Twitter to move to Threads in the next couple of months.

I’m sure it will also suck out some users — after all, there is a promise of .

So the terrain has just shifted very considerably. How do we adjust and turn this to our advantage?

Finally I'm getting around to listen to @mike 's Dot.Social episode with @rklambo and @pcottle from #meta, talking about #threads.

Mike asks the most important question first: "why are you [Meta] doing this [Fediverse integration]?"

I think I have been on the internet for 33 years now. 1990 sounds about right.

The original wow factor for me was Usenet. You could just run this app — it wasn’t called an app then — on a close Apollo workstation, in my case, and have these incredibly knowledgeable discussions on arcane subjects you’d never find anybody in real life to talk about, and with people around the world. For free, too!

If you were patient because I think for about 30 people we had one 9600 baud line.

Now listening to the second episode of @mike's Dot-Social podcast, this time with @evan, author of the protocol.

They start off by discussing the history of the W3C's ActivityPub standardization effort.

I'm looking for historical examples where a closed, monopolistic network (like, say, Twitter), was supplanted by an open one (say, the Fediverse) and what turmoil ensued.

AOL and the internet is the obvious one, but is there anything else?

Thoughtful post on problems for the people who make the run, by @thisismissem .

Not sure how much of it can be addressed with money, but some of it can. We need to find ways of sustainably funding the existing fediverse, and not just that, all the innovations we need and want in the future. Donations isn’t it. Heroic efforts by individuals who then burn out isn’t it either. Constructive suggestions?

So why is it that Fediverse-based software development projects all need to have a Discord or such?

Actually, I know why that is. What I don't know is whether anybody is working on bringing Discord-like functionality to the Fediverse and if not, why not.

I am devastated by the news that Naomi Wu aka SexyCyborg has been silenced by the Chinese authorities.

She represents so many things that the world desperately needs: competence, confidence, ability to communicate, ability to cross cultures and languages, shattering of old stereotypes, a positive view of the future, and much more.

The repressive old guard should put itself away instead. In China and here because similar people are coming for the Naomis here, too.
