Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

https://npr.org/2023/01/08/1147737247/teen-pregnancy-rates-have-declined-significantly

@derle @mekkaokereke I came here to say the same thing. 30 years ago someone 20 years old could afford a modest apartment in most of the US on a shit-wage job. Now a lot of 20 year olds in the same position live with their parents. Not negating or arguing your other points. But I was there, and I see how bad housing has become for young Americans.

A common piece of advice for clear writing is "Avoid double negatives".

But "avoid" and "negative" are both negatives! Why isn't it always phrased as "Negate things at most once"?

gkemp,

@simontatham I was taught "don't use no double negatives". That made the rule clear to me.

@StillIRise1963 It occurred to me this morning that she's running for the nomination in 2028. This round is just to lay the ground work for her to be the heir apparent when Trump goes to prison or dies.

We'll need to keep up this "Haley is backed by Koch" message for a long time. She's not some safe alternative.

What is one of your best rainy day memories?

My Cousin Sarah and I got to stay at our Great Grandma's house together, and it was raining, and she told us we didn't have to be cooped up, we could go play in the rain. This was very exciting, because it's not something our parents would have gone for. So we twirled around and leapt in puddles and licked raindrops off rose petals. When we were done our Gran put us in a hot bath, and made us hot tea and treats. She brought out a big bag of costume jewelry and let us go through it, we tried everything on, and thought we were very fancy, and she let us keep our favorite ones.

gkemp,
@gkemp@hachyderm.io avatar

@RickiTarr Texas had been in a years-long drought when my son started playing tee ball. Five year old kids learning baseball. I was an assistant coach (and zookeeper) on the team. One game was interrupted by a sudden rain storm. The kids in the field just looked up at the sky, bewildered. I urged the players to take shelter in the dugout.

โ€œHavenโ€™t yโ€™all seen rain before?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

@TonyStark Iโ€™m not mad at you, and I appreciate everyone trying to help fix things in Washington. Iโ€™m just tired of being treated like a piggy bank for the national party while they do squat to help us take back Texas. Texas state Democrats went to Washington and literally begged Congress to pass the the John Lewis voting rights act in 2021, but their pleas were denied. Weโ€™re on our own, so we have to prioritize Texas races.

One of my favorite political action organizations, Swing Left, has announced a strategy for 2024. They're focused on 12 states that are critical to winning back the House for Democrats, keeping the narrow Democratic majority in the Senate, reelecting Biden-Harris, and building Democratic power in the states.

They plan to double down on supporting and building local grassroots groups, a key to current and future wins. Itโ€™s a great organization to get involved with.

Well, it's official. Our solar panel array on the new house is kind of nuts. On a good day at this time of year the old house produced 9-10kWh. The new one ... 64kWh. I'm looking forward to getting batteries installed to manage that energy, as well as to participate in the utility's virtual power plant system. Do you have solar? How much do you see on a good day this time of year?

gkemp,
@gkemp@hachyderm.io avatar

@mattferrell Central Texas. Yesterday was a clear, dry, sunny day. We made 56.4 kWh yesterday. The all time peak was 75 kWh one sunny June day.

I have often wondered why, when stores close, landlords leave the spaces empty for years at a time instead of lowering rents. The answer, apparently, is banks often won't let them:

There's an ex-Chase Bank near my home, a branch that closed in the financial crisis, which has now sat empty for 15 years. I've often wondered how this was even possible. I'm thinking now that Chase has continued to make lease payments on the property, all this time.

Need to point this out.

As a murderer stabbed a Muslim woman named Dr. Talat Khan to death, witnesses report that 17 Texans pulled out their firearms. 17! The murderer stabbed her, stopped to check her pulse, confirmed she was alive, & went back to stabbing her to death.

And 17 "good guys with guns" did nothing.

A reminder that the "good guy with a gun" myth is a propaganda point to sell more guns. It does nothing beyond an anecdote to save lives.

gkemp,
@gkemp@hachyderm.io avatar

@lin11c @QasimRashid In Texas, where this attack took place, you can use deadly force to stop an attempted murder. You will almost certainly be arrested, and possibly charged. You might be sued in civil court, but you'd have a strong defense.

I don't think you have a duty to intervene. I could be wrong on that.

State law on this subject is hard to read. These lawyers have a good summary that matches my understanding.

The more I read about gut stuff, the more I have no patience for the fatphobic people who claim Americans are fat and itโ€™s all their fault. (Also fatphobia is bad pls donโ€™t be like that)

There is something very seriously weird with the food supply in this country. In this study, the gut microbiome of Hmong immigrants changes almost immediately upon moving to the US.

https://archive.ph/2018.11.13-163417/https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2018/11/how-immigration-affects-microbiome/574585/

gkemp,

@skinnylatte We pasteurize milk differently in the US. A high temperature short time (HTST) process is used, no doubt to save money. I believe the rest of the world uses a lower temperature for a longer time. This might explain the taste difference. Iโ€™m not a milk fan (is this why?) and have never had non-American milk so I can only speculate.

I witnessed a actually happening in real life!

A guy at the self service checkout was getting increasingly irate and bellowed at a passing staff member that he wanted to speak to the manager.
