Microsoft recall is fucking insane.

Recall snapshots are kept on Copilot+ PCs themselves, on the local hard disk, and are protected using data encryption on your device and (if you have Windows 11 Pro or an enterprise Windows 11 SKU) BitLocker.

Your doing what? Microsoft wh-

Recall uses Copilot+ PC advanced processing capabilities to take images of your active screen every few seconds. [...]

WHAT WHY NO ST-

Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers. That data may be in snapshots that are stored on your device, especially when sites do not follow standard internet protocols like cloaking password entry.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

It treats material protected with digital rights management (DRM) similarly; like other Windows apps such as the Snipping Tool, Recall will not store DRM content.

Ah, but of course. The DRM is protected...

The flip side to “Europeans are lazy and don’t work hard” is that we’re able to maintain a modern society with a high standard of living while still being able to spend time with our families. And why kill yourself through overwork when most of the rewards go to somebody else, anyway?

'Five for profit publishers (Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley, Taylor Francis and MDPI) publish over 50% of all publications. In economics this is called an oligopoly, where a small number of companies control the market. Worse, because scientists “have” to publish in top journals, publishers have even more power than the oligopoly nature suggests.'

late-90s computer peripherals are all like. appears as a normal 3-button mouse. but the buttons have different icons on them resembling a globe, a star, and an arrow. when you press the left mouse button, instead of clicking, it types the string "www.website" into your computer. pressing the middle button opens the AOL signup page. when you press the right mouse button, it opens up realplayer, and, after 45 seconds of loading, plays a short low-res video of a guy yelling "i'm surfing the web!"

In bash, writing ${var?} instead of just ${var} or $var means if var isn't defined then bash will throw an error and not execute your command, instead of expanding it to "" and carrying on.

mv file1 file2 $subdir # oops, I overwrote file2
mv file1 file2 ${subdir?} # error message instead of disaster

My favourite use of this is for example commands in documentation, with placeholders for the user to fill in. Then it's OK if a user accidentally copy-pastes it without filling them in!

I accidentally found a security issue while benchmarking postgres changes.

If you run debian testing, unstable or some other more "bleeding edge" distribution, I strongly recommend upgrading ASAP.

I was doing some micro-benchmarking at the time, needed to quiesce the system to reduce noise. Saw sshd processes were using a surprising amount of CPU, despite immediately failing because of wrong usernames etc. Profiled sshd, showing lots of cpu time in liblzma, with perf unable to attribute it to a symbol. Got suspicious. Recalled that I had seen an odd valgrind complaint in automated testing of postgres, a few weeks earlier, after package updates.

Really required a lot of coincidences.

Russians staying in Sri Lanka have showed their gratitude by creating a number of “whites only" night clubs, denying access to local Sri Lankans. So Sri Lankan authorities now decided to help the racists by telling all 288,000 Russians in Sri Lanka to take the next flight back to good old Moscow, where the average skin color is more to their liking.

Perfect! 😘👌

"Go to an old cemetery. See all the baby graves from before the 1950s & 60s? After that, hardly any. That's when people started vaccinating their children against deadly childhood diseases. If you're unsure what to do to protect your kids, the answer is literally written in stone." — Michael Okuda

Without vaccines, many transmissible diseases were once an early death sentence. People are so quick to forget how fortunate we are to have access to them.

Maxton, to cooking

Love this online recipe hack!
...

If you add “cooked.wiki/“ to beginning of ANY recipe url (before the https:/) it strips away everything but the recipe and organizes the ingredients and method into separate columns.

Also adds a dictation option too!

The same baked oatmeal recipe but run through cooked.wiki. It is now cleaned up and organized like a cookbook with ingredients in a column to the left and the method in a column to the right. Everything else is stripped away.

Only 700 net new IT jobs were created in the US in 2023 compared to 267,000 in 2022. This is due to both layoffs and increased usage of AI-based automation.

The impact has mostly been to entry-level jobs which reverses a trend of tech being youth-obsessed. I have personally been surprised at how much big tech companies seem to now favor keeping around senior people and eliminating junior roles. A senior dev + AI tools is now more attractive than multiple junior devs.
