7,200 images per hour—or two every second.

That’s how many screenshots smart TVs are taking to identify the shows you watch, and ultimately, target ads and make content recommendations. ⬇️

🌅 Good morning.

New #research from Consumer Reports offers a rare look into the scope of Meta's online surveillance.

It goes way beyond what most may expect—Meta can know many of the websites you visit and even what you’re doing IRL.

Would you want Facebook to know if you visited a suicide hotline?

Our investigation from June 2023 found that over 30 suicide hotline websites sent visitor data to Facebook. That story has now become a finalist for a NIHCM award!

If you're here on Mastodon you're probably not on Twitter (X).

So we'll fill you in on the platform's latest: It's making users wait 60x longer for major competitors' pages to load than the average wait for other sites.

@themarkup It’s true. The progress bar doesn’t just slow down, it entirely freezes before proceeding to load. I tried it on a Substack link.

There’s been a lot of talk about companies’ power as users post support for and report subsequent shadowbans.

We looked into it on Instagram—and found the platform:
⚠️ suppressed hashtags
⚠️ demoted photos of soldiers, tanks, and city ruins
⚠️ deleted captions without warning
⚠️ categorized comments criticizing Israel + supporting Palestine as “spam”
⚠️ limited users’ ability to appeal moderation decisions
⚠️ more.

Read the story and our methodology:

Then it went bankrupt.

So... what happened to people’s data? #News:

rhizome,

@qkslvrwolf
That's a bit too binary. I don't think "ruined" should be the standard, but "risk." Exfiltration adds risk to its victims, and it's cumulative.

@rhizome @themarkup

There's some ability to quantify how much of that risk likely translated into actual issues, and that's a thing that should be done when assessing damage and penalties

I am also 100% fine with starting with broad strokes and refining, just to reset the mindset of these fuckers.

Gig work is making its way into health care and appears to be already harming workers and patients alike.

RnDanger,

@themarkup
The gig economy is the same economy with all of the safeties removed by billionaire venture capital and sheer buffoonish willpower. It's bad enough we let them drive our streets unregulated; they don't belong anywhere near medicine.

6th_ez_pc,

@themarkup

Thank you for this vitally important reporting and The Markup's consistently excellent work.

I'm well informed about healthcare and finance in healthcare.

Apps like clipboard or gig work are singular symptoms born from the completely broken US healthcare system.

Unfortunately, the general public hasn't been informed of the truly deep rot and, honestly, likely insurmountable corruption where US healthcare puts💰 far above care of our loved ones.
