#Trump pledges to 'roll back' Democratic President Joe #Biden’s #gun#regulations put in place by Democratic President Joe #Biden & to fire the #ATF chief during a lengthy rally speech to the #NRA on Sat, during which he accepted the influential group's #endorsement.
During the speech, #Trump repeated a pledge to fire the director of the Bureau of #Alcohol, #Tobacco, #Firearms & #Explosives, known as the #ATF, on Day One of a potential administration. He accused that agency, which enforces #UnitedStates#GunLaws, of being heavy-handed w/ #FirearmOwners & revoking licenses on frivolous grounds.
#CanadaPost is refusing to collect #firearms that were #banned by the federal government in 2020, complicating Ottawa's plans for a #BuybackProgram to remove 144,000 firearms from private hands, federal sources say.
The Crown corporation informed the government of its position in a recent letter. It said its decision was based on concerns about its employees' security, according to federal sources who were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
Thurs, the #Biden admin announced they are closing what is known as the #"GunShowLoophole," by tightening up the definition of what it means to be "engaged in the business" of selling #firearms.
The #ATF has just implemented a change in the federal register language, which was previously more specific to who was selling guns, & the agency did it in accordance w/the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, passed in 2022.
The admin rolled out the proposed rule in Sept 2023, taking in over 300k comments from the public.
Prior to the passage of the Bipartisan #SaferCommunities Act, those "engaged in the business" of #firearms dealer were required to #register to become a federally #licensed firearm dealer, acc/to the language previously used. The definition that #ATF is implementing on Thurs is more specific to better #regulate the market in accordance w/the new federal #law, acc/to the WH.
“It will also close the #GunShowLoophole & it closes the fire sale loophole as well by clarifying how #firearms dealers who go out of business or lose their #license must go about liquidating their inventory,” #MerrickGarland told reporters. “Under this #regulation, it will not matter if #guns are sold on the internet, at a gun show or in a brick & mortar store, if you sell guns [you] must conduct #BackgroundChecks.”
The 106 #firearms#confiscated in #Ontario mark the largest seizure of handguns & assault-style rifles in the province's history, police said. Of the 168 guns seized in the #US, most were being smuggled into Ontario through #Buffalo, police said, though the #investigation reached as far as #Florida.
Police said firearms were being sold days or even hours after they were #smuggled across the border.
"Hundreds of young children in the U.S. have been killed playing with guns over the last two decades, according to a study published Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The vast majority of cases involved guns that were stored unlocked and loaded.
The CDC report's authors say their new findings highlight the rising toll taken by accidental gun deaths that could be preventable."

@GottaLaff I wish people were as concerned abouts the USA child firearm death rate as they are about foreign wars or political retribution. Vote on domestic issues. #firearms
The #WhiteHouse on Wed announced a new plan to assist states in curbing #GunViolence, turning the attention to the local level w/the hope of further federal #GunControl legislation fading.
In addition to 2 new executive actions on #gun storage & reporting lost or stolen #firearms, the #Biden admin is offering tools to help #states#BanAssaultWeapons, strengthen BackgroundChecks & implement local #programs to prevent & respond to gun violence.
Researchers found firearm suicides account for approximately half of overall suicide deaths, they said in a report published Thursday, meaning of the nearly 50,000 overall suicide deaths in 2022, about 27,000 of them were gun-related.
The analysis, using data from from 2019 to 2022, also highlighted an increase in firearm suicides."
How a #Maine Businessman Made the AR-15 Into America’s Best-Selling Rifle
Neither a #gun enthusiast nor a right-wing ideologue, Richard Dyke used #political connections and lobster giveaways to build Bushmaster, the company that popularized assault-style rifles.
I’m not going to link to it, but YouTube just recommended a video about the DesertTech Quattro-15, which allows an AR-15 to take 53-round magazines.
As a reminder, civilized states limit you to 10-round magazines because they know that there is little defensive use to more rounds but much offensive use.
So don’t worry if you forget the name: you can be sure it’ll get coverage when it’s used for the next mass murder.
"GOP strategists urge congressional candidates to campaign against a national abortion ban"
"Disturbed by tough election losses on Tuesday, Republicans say the party needs to make clear to voters, in speeches and TV ads, that it doesn't favor banning all abortions."
Their idea: Say the GOP is for "reasonable limits on late-term abortions" as opposed to Dems' "taxpayer-funded abortion without limits.”🙄
👀“US stopped issuing export licenses for most civilian firearms & ammo for 90 days for all non-govt users, citing national security & foreign policy interests.
Commerce Dept did not provide further details for the pause, which also includes shotguns & optical sights, but said urgent review will assess the "risk of firearms being diverted to entities or activities that promote regional instability, violate human rights, or fuel criminal activities." https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-halts-exports-most-civilian-firearms-90-days-2023-10-27/
NO #SecondAmendment issues here — NONE — even though no amendment gives anyone absolute unfettered rights anyway!
These export restrictions have got to hurt the #NRA more than any domestic background checks or registration requirements, especially if the export pause is extended for any prolonged period of time.
My granddaughter started kindergarten this fall. The first week they had an info session and drill on what to do if a bear gets into the school. How to hide, how to be quiet, how to look after each other, how to stay safe. Obviously this was coded for a shooter so that 4 and 5 year olds could understand it and not be terrified by an unknown danger. I am in Canada. You can't even imagine how much this pisses me off.
In rural Canada, most households have guns for hunting and livestock protection, at least almost everyone that I know. We have gun ranges and gun clubs, gun camps and classes. When my youngest was 14, she attended a week long firearms camp for teens 13 to 19. I was there the whole time because I helped a filmmaker film the whole week. I participated in shooting skeet, black powder, 300's, and 22's. We also learned basics of archery, survival shelter and fire building. Each day consisted of classroom in the morning, field work in the afternoon. The kids really learned a ton of safety and survival skills from a variety of older people with hunting, farming, and survival skills. One instructor was an author and pilot that had survived a small plane crash in the wilderness in winter for weeks and his skills in doing so. The kids that passed the written test and demonstrated they understood safety and function with firearms got their acquisition and possession license. The division was aprox. 50/50 girls to boys. This is an important and significant point.
The marked difference between our 2 countries with regard to firearms is the culture. The kids were never ever taught that you need a gun to protect yourself from "a bad guy". There was no swaggering around with pistols. There were no photo-ops posing with guns. There was no toxic masculinity. There was no "othering" of people into good and bad. There was no teaching the kids that "someone is going to come for you so you better be ready". The kids were taught self reliance, hard core skills, and how knowledge is what will keep you safe. They were taught that the guns were another tool in the toolbox to be used properly and respected.
There are many more nuances to this whole topic, it would take novel length posts to cover them. But the discourse I see all over the interwebs right now just never seems to get to this point.
