Remember set up new on-by-default sharing of your account information with every other Patreon user (and maybe the world)? Remember people posting how to turn it off, because they were using confusing language/dark patterns to try to you into oversharing?

I got the "welcome to the new Patreon" today, and ... they've turned the "Community Profile" setting back on after I deliberately turned it off.

Go check your settings, and opt out -- again.

New analysis: #AI #chatbots like OpenAI's #ChatGPT and #Google 's #Bard consume an astronomical amount of #electricity and #water — or, more precisely, the massive #dataCenters that power them do. By 2027, these server farms could use anywhere between 85 to 134 terawatt hours of #energy per year, 0.5 percent of the entire globe's energy demands." https://futurism.com/the-byte/ai-electricity-use-spiking-power-entire-country #climateCrisis #ressources #greed #LLM

Reminder that RedHat makes A LOT of money already. The results of the 2019 fiscal year show that RedHat spends twice as much money on ads and sales people than on developers. (www.businesswire.com)

Our subscriptions mostly pay for the salesmen and the ads. They sell ads first, IT second. So I'm not gonna cry for RedHat. The image of the poor developers working in a cave, struggling to make money is only in our mind. They had a perfectly functional model but decided to sabotage some of it to try to squeeze even more money....

So, I may be a "doomsayer" (I consider myself a realist), but I'm always trying to see if there's a solution to getting us out of the mess we're in. Perhaps I would describe myself as an optimistic pessimist. Anyhow, based on my recent research, here are some of the solutions I think we (humanity) should pursue collectively...

  1. Plug up the ! Seriously! That's a big part of the problem!

  2. Make the price of expensive! I remember when having meat was considered a special occasion -- not a daily occurrence.

  3. Make things out of . Now that we've cracked the recipe, there's no excuse not to use it! Especially with rising sea levels (Roman concrete holds up better when exposed to water).

  4. Manufacture stuff that lasts! No more -- items that can't be upgraded and/or repaired by a skilled user or a local repair shop!

  5. Grow food locally! Turn empty spaces into (and ).

  6. Utilize new (and ancient) technologies to the max! , reflective white paint, building new structures with , and other ways to cool/heat spaces without using !

That's just a few off the top of my head. I think a lot of the solutions are right in front of us -- but and are keeping them from being implemented!

Good news:

Musk's $55B Tesla pay pkg is voided by a Delaware judge after a shareholder challenged it as excessive, a ruling that takes a giant bite out of Musk’s wealth.

Decision means that >5 years after Tesla's co-founder was granted the largest exec comp. plan in history.

The SHLDR plaintiff claimed that Tesla, Inc.’s directors breached their fiduciary duties by awarding Musk a performance-based equity-comp. plan⬇️.

I'm shocked, shocked that we won't be able to keep warming to 1.5℃. Who could have seen that coming.

Business as usual will result in warming of around 3.4℃. My bet is we'll wind up closer to that than to 1.5℃, due to the fact that shortsighted, ignorant, selfish, greedy people run the world. I don't know if civilization can survive that kind of climate. I guess we'll find out the hard way.

The imminent threat of IP theft by some of the most powerful corporations in the world has, I believe, given me reason to remove the vast majority of my content from the Web. I have done so with a heavy heart, for I want to share the folktales and fairy tales and legends of Norway with as many people as possible. What I refuse to do, however, is work for the enrichment of the oligarchs at Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, etc. without (morally) decent compensation for my labour, or my explicit consent.

The Web has become a little less interesting today – blame the putrid corporate vultures.

Before Mar 2021, #ElonMusk’s charitable foundation never announced any donations to CameronCounty, an impoverished region at the southern tip of TX that is home to his #SpaceX launch site & local ofcls who help regulate it.

has not hired any staff for his foundation, tax filings show. Its billions are handled by a board that consists of himself & 2 volunteers, one of whom reports putting in so little time that it averages out to 6 minutes per week.

In 2022, the last year for which records are available, they gave away $160 million, which was $234 million less than the required — the 4th-largest shortfall of any foundation in the country.
