Another England - book review

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/apr/04/another-england-by-caroline-lucas-review-seeing-green

'For all the debate about what an independent Scotland or reunited Ireland might look like if the union collapsed, she writes, there was surprisingly little thought given to what kind of England might emerge from the wreckage.’

The Guardian would never countenance such heretical thoughts. Its is terribly middle class and ‘correct’.

A short but interesting review.

NEW PODCAST: This week we're taking a look at the EU's once-trumpeted nature restoration law. Can the EU still claim to be a world leader when it comes to going green?

PLUS a music-themed good week, bad week 🎵

Front garden, mini update.

In another week, I will be harvesting hostas to cook/eat 👩‍🌾

My mixed perennials pot is bursting with new life. Tulips are starting to bud/bloom, columbine are growing new foliage & buds & my pruned burgundy lace cap hydrangeas are showing new growths 🥰

Mixed perennials pot. Filled with tulips, columbines & pruned burgundy hydrangea with new buds.
Looking down at hostas foliage, in a pot.
Ferns, unfurling against painted gray & green cement.

I send thanks to the buyer from Canada who purchased a framed print of

May the artwork take you to a place of joy and satisfaction, a fine spring day on which sunny, happy flowers burst into life around you.

Who are green jobs really for?

From Atmos magazine: "Without expanding the definition to include the care sector, the creation of 'green' jobs in male-dominated industries like energy and construction risks perpetuating gender inequality in the labor market."

Come on Spring!

When the Winter just won't end, any sign of green is welcome. 😄

Took a trip to Burnie on the north coast of Tasmania. There's a beautiful spot on the Emu River called Fern Glade Reserve, a good place for platypus spotting. Didn't see any today, but the track and river were beautiful.

Black velvet display piece looking phenomenal in this light. Don't you just want to reach out and pet it like a precious little kitten? Very good looking piece.

By the river (own, Correze, France)

This is the public forest park next to my small town, and a favourite place to walk Lusha in the summer when it's too hot to go anywhere else.

Despite being next to a large camping ground and sports centre, it's quiet and full of wildlife. I've seen otters, red deer, golden eagles and wild honeybees.

A riverbank, with a large oak tree on the left, a burst of sunlight shining through it's lush green branches. The water is shallow and slow flowing, a line of rocks stretching across in a straight line. On the far side the ground is covered in moss and dark pine trees.

Me & my hiking friend saw only one other person out in the rains & trails, yesterday. Once you go deeper into the forest, the rain doesn't fall through the trees' canopy as much. The air smelled so good!

I published a little seedling emoji on the websites, with a report on /energy.txt .

It's purely text based for now, as I need to do more research as how the measurements impact the energy efficiency costs.

An example here; https://dutchbeercollective.nl/energy.txt

Yo friends! Is there a way to calculate an energy savings score for bytes saved per pageload? I built a system for my static sites that optimizes the most uit of it's assets. And I would love to calculate what it's environmental costs savings are (note: building it does have a cost!). I'm basically looking for an average and understand that it's not a linear metric (e.g. bytes saved on jpg->webp is different than html). @JohanEmpa ?

If you are concerned about oil pollution of our seas, then SkyTruth's Cerulean visual tool is for you.

Using satellite imagery it tracks oils spills in the sea... you can use the filtering to focus on various sub groups (by geography, date etc.).

If your teaching touches on global environmental issues you might want to look at this; if you just interested, its both illuminating & shocking...
