For those who are new here and miss tweetdeck, you can get the same in Mastodon - just go into settings and enable the Advanced UI - you will then get a multiple column customizable view
hello everyone who is #newhere from this month’s #twitterMigration, if you need someone to take you by the hand and #help you get settled in, just ask anyone who seems nice! like me for example! i like to explain all the things
The people who are afraid that a sudden influx of new users will change the dynamic here seem curiously incurious about how the dynamic changed when THEY arrived.
Hi, new friends. If you’re new to Mastodon, I just wanted to welcome you.
I’m a mas.to moderator. We work hard to keep Mastodon enjoyable for everyone. That means a zero tolerance policy for racists, misogynists, xenophobes, etc.
Other platforms moderate lightly, but we, here, take it seriously. And if a whole server is wretched, we block the whole thing for you.
Block the trolls. Report the worst. We have your back.
So in honor of #JohnMastodon and the ongoing #twittermigration I will once again edit this pinned post which starts off a thread on how to not just use Mastodon but really get good at it.
I'll start with some links to basics and high level stuff and move on to some more "how to get the most out of it" intermediate level stuff by which point I assume the rest of the edible will have kicked in and the digressions will likely take over. Yep we keep it real over here on heads.social
Months in now to the great #MastodonMigration, and our community is being tested. Mastodon is not perfect. The interface needs polish, the feature set is a source of contention, and shiny new objects hold out promises to solve everything that frustrates us. But for all that, it is an amazing phenomenon. A rag-tag, people powered network threatens corporate domination of social networking. Together we can do this.
My science Twitter contacts seem much more enthusiastic about Bluesky than Mastodon. The greatest criticism I have heard about Mastodon is its decentralized nature; people were afraid of being stuck in silos. As far as I understand, #Bluesky is also decentralized, yet this does not seem to be how is how it is perceived. It seems like an opportunity has been missed here.
What do you think?
Mastodon may not be perfect, but it sure has gotten pretty awesome lately. This week the community boosted a discourse on the tautological placename etymology "Torpenhow Hill", which actually translates to "hill, hill, hill, hill", and a one billion year time lapse animation of two galaxies colliding. We registered our collective outrage at CNN, featured amazing artwork and photography, and recognized scientist Grace Hopper, inventor of the first compiler. What's not to love!
Forza offriamo qualche caffè, che sta già per arrivare il WE e Musk ha in mente altre diavolerie per monetizzare. Ciò provocherà un’altra #Twittermigration e quindi necessità di caffè per gli @amministratore e @filippodb
I predict there will be another #TwitterMigration in a couple of weeks, just in time for the anniversary of the previous one. #FediAdmin people better get prepared for the upcoming spike.
There will also be a lot of people complaining that they need to “stay there” because they need it for “reach”, despite their reach there getting worse and worse, and the fact that if they had invested in the #Fediverse a year ago they would already have better reach here than there.
My column today (paywalled): "But TwitterX’s slow-crumble into two vast and trunkless legs of stone in a discourse desert obscures the fact that profit-seeking corporate social media platforms based on monetising user data and driven by targeted advertising were never a true public square any more than EuroDisney is."
PSAish post. If you seen an introduction post, even if nothing in their post speaks to you personally… boost the motherfucker. #Newbies#X#TwitterMigration#Mastodon Gratuitous goofy cat pic of Fred and his medieval doppelgänger included for obvious traction reasons😉And ya know lol just cause I love Fred 🥰 #Cats#CatsOfMastodon#FredTheWonderCat#Histodon
A better technical solution (without Google) is in the works. So why not prepare one for international media as well?
Can you point me to verified (!) accounts on Mastodon or the #Fediverse from newspapers/magazines/media etc.? Please, not individual journalists, that's a separate table. And where should I collect it (GoogleDocs, Github)?
The steady flow of publications announcing the imminent demise of Twitter/X is now almost exclusively naming Bluesky and Threads as alternatives. Why are people losing interest in Mastodon and why do they not understand that going from one (commercially) owned platform to another is missing the point entirely? Latest example: the opinion piece by the otherwise well-inspired Paul Krugman. (@pkrugman ?) https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/19/opinion/twitter-x-elon-musk.html #Twitter#TwitterMigration
