23andMe was hacked and DNA records of 7 million people were compromised. Originally they said it was 14,000.

They just sent out an innocuous sounding email about change in Terms of Service.

If you do not respond rejecting the change, you will give up the ability to be part of the class action lawsuits that are being filed, or take action in court against them.

They sent this out before they are notifying those whose data were breached.

Strongly recommend you opt out of the change.

I would have said 23andMe's change in their Terms of Service was an example of, to use @pluralistic Cory Doctorow's phrase, an example of , but like most ToSs it was already a piece of shit.

"Discover Together and Week in Review emails are a MASSIVE breach of privacy and trust!"

I'm so sad my favorite recipe storage and meal planning app/website was bought by Samsung and the enshitification is happening so fast.

Mostly I loved being able to save all my recipes from around the web into one place that I could easily browse when meal planning.

Debating saying fuck it to digital and just going back to a binder.

My fellow meal planners and foodies, what do you use?

So apparently I'm not able to log into my (Java ed.) anymore.

Probably haven't used it since before the MS acquisition so yay !

I know I have access to the email I would have used to register it, but of course they say it's not what's on the account.

Any advice on how to get MS to activate it to my account?

(Other fun fact, when creating a new Minecraft 'nick' they said pixelpusher220 was too long. So I shortened to just pixelpusher...and they then appended FOUR numbers - sigh).

A lot of folks talking about BlueSky.

Correct me if I'm wrong... it's not decentralized in a "power to the people" sense... right?

The hardware can be decentralized, but the software, algorithm, ads, and control are still centralized... right?

So, Jack Dorsey et all have found a way to get people to pay for the infrastructure costs while they rake in all the profit from centralized software control?

What am I missing?

A brilliant thread by Cory Doctorow again. This time on of garage door openers.

I use an OpenGarage door Automator on my garage door. The firmware is open source and the device is like $35. It integrates trivially with . And it can’t be taken away by a company suddenly deciding it wants more money from me.

from the company side probably looks like this

  • create minimum viable product
  • have no clue about your business model
  • be happy and surprised that people actually use what you build
  • find out why people are actually using your product
  • improve product
  • improve business model to point it should have been at the beginning if only you had known about peoples actual use-cases then.
  • get investors with traction
  • "improve" business model to death.

Guess which garage door opener vendor I'll never buy from again? Be careful they own like a dozen different labels. Who would of thought enshitification could reach all the way down to garage door openers...sigh...anyway there are workaround boards people can use if you are stuck with them like we are... arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/1…

Also, I managed to rent a for the first time this week. It's an interesting experience - it seems to have been designed by someone who has never designed a car before, and knows nothing about for safety-critical environments.

I think I now know why Tesla drivers are always cutting up cyclists. They're too busy trying to find controls on a massive touch-screen to pay attention to the road.

MarkBrigham,

@steve Tesla is just plain shitty.

There are much better EV options. Like a Chevy Bolt (I have the EUV verson).

Better still would be if the cities of North America had never abandoned superior technology and urban development; if they still had the streetcars they had in the 1890s through the mid 1950s. Those would be cities worth living in.

I can't turn the same blind eye to sp0t1fy that a lot of people do in tech. They are praised for this "developer platform" tool and the way they organize teams and have such a successful engineering model yadda yadda yadda.

They prey on human psychology. They are making it impossible for independent music to stay afloat. They are responsible for the of the music industry, but the tech industry just eats it up.

If you work there and have a job and enjoy it, I don't hold that against you. I just wish more of tech recognized the harm they have done, and keep doing, to musicians.

All that is left is a conclusion.

(If you get the error message, just wait a minute).

How this series happened:

When I tried to do a standard legal explainer, I'd get hit in the comment by a tsunami of rage, cynicism, and misinformation.

One option is not to read the comments. But I like to read through them because questions help me focus.

So I decided to get to the root of the problem.

The worst thing about online learning is that everything has become a video. Every code tutorial. Every design tutorial. Nobody actually writes out a guide anymore.

It's just "hey guys welcome to my tutorial" and watching 10 minutes of content that mostly isn't relevant...

    phiofx,

@Daojoan there are various factors at play. an important one is the of online learning (chasing virality, engagement, clicks etc) in order to fund the creation of material. next step: , learn string theory in twelve easy 30 sec videos

but video does a better job at faking what people really need: a teacher that will explain things interactively, addressing the level and difficulties of the student and build on their strengths
