“Name a force or impulse that threatens the stability of the American political system – distrust in the fairness of elections, conspiracy theorizing, the embrace of authoritarianism – and it is always more prevalent among rural Whites than among those living elsewhere."
~ Tom Schaller and Paul Waldman, White Rural Rage: The Threat to American Democracy (New York: Random House, 2024), p. 5
"The Ford #Conservative govt is basically shuttering rural healthcare in #Ontario. They’ll slowly squeeze the life out of what he hasn’t already dismantled. Interestingly these rural ridings have long held blue banners. This will be interesting. In the meantime we can hear the death rattle of healthcare."
My wife is from this area, she remembers this being a nice little house with a neat tidy yard. Of course nobody lives here now. How long have those curtains been hanging in the window? Is somebody peeking out? 👻
Here in #rural#Minnesota, our internet sometimes drops for hours, sometimes a day or two. For fun, I setup #Kiwix offline internet content server using and old laptop and WiFi router. Now we have our own private #internet that never goes down (except when the power is out, which is another toot).
We have #Wikipedia and lots of other useful content, all available #offline without an internet connection. To learn more, follow the Kiwix Project.
Is the solution to the rural housing crisis to convince land owners to sell land at discounted prices for affordable housing?
One mechanism would be to fix the price of rural 'exception' sites & then getting owners to accept that price as being outside the 'normal' planning (and pricing) process.
Round here (the Lune Valley) my guess there are some concerned land owners who would take a lower price if affordable housing for locals was the result!
» Nicolas Legendre 🎙️ 1/
"If Donald Trump gets back to the Oval Office, it will be because — once again — rural Whites put him there. Which is why I hope that White Rural Rage: The Threat to American Democracy, my new book with Tom Schaller, will be particularly timely as we head into the general election."
Then he provides an overview of the book, which explores the implications of this central finding:
Our local Secondary school, threatened with closure, is in the middle of this picture, which was taken from the top of a nearby hill.
It is a Scottish country secondary (or high) school with a primary school attached, teaching kids from the age of 3 at nursery, through to 15/16 in the secondary end. Children have always moved onto to another school if they want to do 5th and 6th year. The secondary used to be one of the top performing schools in Scotland. #rural#education#photography
NOTE: We are victims of no Healthcare. Part of Halifax does not get rural assistance as they fall under HALIFAX including Sheet Harbour that was closed 90 continuous days in 2023.
IN 40 years, I've never seen the Emergency open, and cannot live in my Retirement home, due to unsafe conditions this causes. No 911

“We have always been here. We just haven’t always felt safe coming out. But there’s no turning back the clock. We’re going to win our liberation today or tomorrow.”
Why can't rural farmers in the US get broadband internet? There are lots of reasons given, but they all boil down to this: The feds haven't forced ISPs to provide universal service. That is, to force ISPs to pay the cost of connecting every customer who wants service -- as was done when the original copper-wire phone system was built out in the 20th century.
If you are travelling in winter, make sure you have an emergency bag. I also carry a folding snow shovel, an emergency triangle, and an old curtain for putting under tyres if we get stuck in snow or mud.
We don't have basic cellular services to the end of Halifax, I'll believe this when I see it. 10 towers would make a difference at 1 million a tower or less.
