To understand why this is not a good idea, consider their economic interest in harvesting data, their poor moderation, and their manipulations. Nothing good can come from their federation. If you're new to Mastodon, remember there is no algorithm here. It takes a little bit of effort to find people that interest you. Search for hashtags and use hashtags in your posts. Hashtags are very important here.

Don't spend 5 minutes looking around and give up. Take some more time to get good content in your timeline and you'll have a much better experience. This place is what you make it. You're in control.

In the wake of this #Bandcamp news, remember that to support your favorite artists, go directly to their merch shop and buy a CD or a record. They will often come with a digital download card so you can download the music onto your devices. While you're there buy a T-shirt or a hoodie if you can. If you're willing and able, try to go to their concert when they come to town.

Artists make shit money from streaming services, so buy directly from the band or their merch shop whenever possible, and tell your friends to do the same. Word of mouth is the best marketing.
