May be interested to hear that Aveta, the community organizer in black tech Twitter has launched a defederated Calckey instance that will be prioritize safety, privacy, and accessibility for minorities.

I’ve been working with her and others and while launched it is still invite only as we address T&S, accessibility issues and how to best grow the platform focused on users.

bipoc people can DM me for an invite, if you’re willing to help us with improving the onboarding experience give a shout as we have product people collecting data and they need volunteer.

Bad faith actors try to control conversations by derailing them.

They have a ton of tactics and this post isn't comprehensive.

Here are a few I've seen today on my afternoon break scrolling this feed.

  • false dichotomy (narrowing the focus to 2 options even when they are not the only two options)

  • straw men (arguing against something nobody said because it's easier than really engaging in actual discussion)

  • changing the subject/whataboutism (if they can't engage on what you're talking about they will try to shortcut you to focus on another issue)

  • equivocation (using ambiguity to make two or more disparate situations to seem comparable)

  • context free takes (purposefully ignoring details that are important to understanding the situation, they will remove all context from a situation to reduce it to something they can argue against, to them nothing is racist, sexist, or wrong because if they remove enough facts from the situation they can spin it as "ok")

-making false claims (they lie, a lot, and they do it without shame or apology and will return to the lie over and over even after they have been shown it's not true)

hyperbolic nonsense (they are all or nothing, if you make a claim that a thing happened one time they will insist you said it ALWAYS happens every time and then argue that because it didn't happen in one instance it never did )

shifting goalposts (they will make a claim and when it is proven false, they will shift to another claim without admitting they were wrong on the first one, they will conflate your inability to refute a deluge of other claims (all bogus) with your inability to refute any of them and will continue to repeat all the false claims as if they were not refuted at all)

gish-galloping (when cornered they will begin to post links repeatedly even if they refute their own claims, even if they don't have ANYTHING to do with what you're talking about. 10-20 links per one comment of yours, just an avalanche of misinformation or information, hoping you will waste time actually clicking on them and they will claim victory)

refusal to answer direct questions (they will NEVER answer a direct question, they will either shift goal posts, change the subject, or ask you a question)

dismissal without reason (if they are unable to refute any of your points or prove their claim they will eventually resort to stating you believe the "narrative" you want to, and then begin in on character assassination by calling you things like "a shill" or "a libtard" or "a sheep")

My advice is to avoid engaging directly with these people at all. They are playing a game and people who are witnessing it are not equipped to pick up on it and tend to side with whoever seems most aggressive. It's not that you can't refute their claims, feel free, just ignore them when they start freaking out and doing all this.

If they start it on your page block them. They will throw a huge fit about censorship and free speech and echo chambers and safe spaces, but you can feel free to ignore that because you're not hurting someone by refusing to listen to hateful claptrap. You're just not.

They don't have anything useful to say anyway, they are only there to derail actual conversations by using the tactics listed above and as soon as they employ any it's best to shut it down if you can. It goes nowhere and it is actually not a useful conversation and will never be one.

Fascists don't want debate, they pretend to. They don't need inclusion. They need to be made afraid. They need to shut the fuck up because if they don't someone is going to punch them in the face. Violence isn't the answer to every problem but it's the only answer that's ever worked against fascism.

I just realized that there is so much noise about and very little about creating template legal policies that instances can adopt that prohibit commercial use of user data.

Whatever you think of defederation there are easy ways to do that. Legal policies on the other hand are complex and require expertise and often money.

Maybe can help crowdsource templates of strict noncommercial legal policies for the so instance admins do not have to figure it out themselves?

One possible solution is one that Mastodon people have been resistant to for years, but that some Black Fediverse people, and the BlueSky people, and I 🙋🏿‍♂️ think make sense:

A combination of Quote posts, and composable moderation providers.

    Let me explain...

Yeah, what people often mean by content warnings, is "label this content, so that people can make individualized decisions to avoid content with that label."

It would be great if as a mastodon user, I could subscribe to a moderation provider. One such moderation provider might label posts that contain eye contact selfies.

It would also be great if I could add a label to something that I boost or quote post.

This whole situation has really brought me to a point of great disgust. It has mostly been users. But, to think your outrage is more important than threats being made on people's lives due to a difference of opinion is insane.

Thanks Kev! You set a precedent where the only and sane way to react is to be open and transparent while they tried to take you in an "off-the-record" meeting.

We have only one weapon and it’s transparency. If we lose that one, we lose everything.

The #redditblackout has moved to a new stage... from a two day blackout to indefinitely shutting down... to people moving away entirely.

Yes, r/startrek has lifted off from #reddit and moved to #lemmy -- and with it, a realization that we need an easy way to help people find their new, old communities that have moved from reddit to #lemmy #kbin and whatever else pops up.

I started a quick and dirty list that you can share and contribute to (PRs welcome!).

It has been over a week since the #redditMigration began - lots of people still cutting ties with #reddit.

We return this week with another big update - including migrating communities with discussions surrounding the #zfs filesystem, #grapheneos, the #raspberrypi pico, #childfree, #adobe #illustrator, #girls #gaming, the #blind community and many more.

Please share if this helped you migrate to communities on #lemmy #kbin or elsewhere on the web!
