A big congrats to @ubuntu and all the flavors on the release of 23.10! Even if we can't tell the future, we know it's gonna be great. 💙 🧡

I really don't understand how people tolerate . I booted back into my Windows 11 install tonight, and it was a total shit show.

AMD graphics driver needed to update, but it couldn't because there was a Windows update pending. When that finally finished and I rebooted, the graphics driver update took a solid 15 minutes (I have gigabit internet...)

And then the ads: "Try Xbox Game Pass!" "Turn on your OneDrive backup!"

Meanwhile, the system is running SO SLOW compared to Kubuntu.

Not to speak of that (in my case also Kubuntu, but it could be others), my 14 years old Aldi laptop stills boots in a few seconds and runs all typical consumer software without any problems. Even Kdenlive.

This is also a question of sustainability.

Isn't it absurd that we produce tons and tons of electronic waste, because of the decisions of a single software company?

The "New Outlook" demands that when adding your account, you also give Microsoft a copy of all your Gmail email, contacts, and calendar data.

    The "Learn More" link confirms:

"Syncing your account to the Microsoft Cloud means that a copy of your email, calendar, and contacts will be synchronized between your email provider and Microsoft data centers."

    WOW.

Good time to switch to @thunderbird, folks!

I'm so excited to share all the cool stuff we are working on over in Thunderbird world. I think a lot of folks will be authentically blown away by what we are playing around with.

    Some teasers:

    • Rust 🦀
    • We heard you want to send End-to-end encrypted files...
    • I'd like to take some notes...

Time to make it Fediverse-official! On Monday, I'll start as a part-time contractor with the amazing @thunderbird Project! I'll be doing all things communications and marketing with the Thunderbird community, and getting to work with a dream team including @killyourfm and @linuxflower . I am excited to keep supporting FOSS communities both for fun and funds, and incredibly grateful for the privilege to do so.

Welcome to the cycle of generative AI making search worse.

Quora uses ChatGPT which hallucinates an answer to a nonsense question.

Google Search picks up this nonsense answer from Quora which has high page rank and treats it as an instant answer.

"Automated translation of web content is now available to Firefox users! Unlike cloud-based alternatives, translation is done locally in Firefox, so that the text being translated does not leave your machine."

I got to see the early demos of this and it is jaws-on-the-floor bonkers wizard magic. Entirely local - and good - translation with no cloud service and like six megabytes of disk space.

PSA: just announced they're changing their privacy policy to default all of your account info, who you support, etc. to public. You need to go into the settings and disable that. (Check the two toggles at the bottom of the Settings page to off.)

And then send Patreon a nasty letter, because default-open is just a stupid model to begin with, period.

While I was expecting it to be alpha quality and very buggy, I was surprised to find a pretty great level of support for the hardware!

The Thunderbird team is back from Mozilla’s All-Hands event, and we’re overwhelmed in the most positive way.

Ryan, Jason, and Alex talk about how Mozilla is building AI tools for the good of humanity, and how our own perception of AI has changed. Plus, the problem with the “hey Mozilla, just build a browser” argument.

It seems like every service that offers social media management (for example Hootsuite, GoCharlie, Buffer) is pushing community managers and marketing folks to use to generate posts, and even entire campaigns.

Just wanted to emphasize that every word you see here is written by a human, and it always will be.

While we believe there are opportunities for AI that might benefit humanity, the time-honored tradition of talking to our fellow humans is NOT one of those opportunities!
