[GOT IT BACK!] Friends, I need help

#LinkedIn, who I heavily depend on to run my marketing agency, suspended me without a reason (“suspected unauthorized login” is what they've said) on Thursday last week

I made a case immediately, crickets. Now a friend posted on my behalf on Twitter https://twitter.com/bellastone/status/1673406459701260298?s=20

And their support replied with this.

This is a huge impact to my business. So if any of you can bring more attention to that tweet or know anyone at LinkedIn... I'd appreciate your help.

The piece I’m working on right now has taken me 60+ hours and counting.

And the hardest part, by far, has nothing to do with finding the time or the energy to do this - it is the immense sense of responsibility that I feel to get this RIGHT. Because most for the things I write under my name are bigger than me.

I’m writing to fight for what I believe in. For the internet. For my industry. For good ideas. For good people who want to do good in the world.

I’m a big proponent of full-text search and literally optimize content for search engines professionally.

I also 100% believe that indexing by search engines of any kind (within an app or with global engines across the whole web) HAS TO BE CONSENTED TO.

Make opt out as easy as possible. Let people remove themselves from indexes.

People can set their content as searchable if they want to, and opt out if they please.

What do I really think about #Threads?

Both as a #marketer and a big fan of #Mastodon and the #Fediverse I see Threads as a way to preserve existing social hierarchies, decrease the quality of content on the platform, and convince users (yet again) that they should view social media as a place to consume "media”... instead of being "social”

I lost a deal with a dream client last week.

I’ve… been struggling to recover from that. My self-esteem is still shattered, and I don’t know how long it will take me until I feel confident enough to get on another sales call.

And that doubt brought back an old nemesis - “the dread". An awful feeling in the back of my mind. My brain reminding me of my trauma.

Like if I wanted to read just one particular article in paper form I could go to the store and buy only that one issue. But online I have to either deal with a paywall or sign up for a full subscription?

I’ve been struggling to spend much time on Mastodon lately because my feed is >50% discussion of Bluesky

Seeing them makes me feel a terrible cocktail of:

• FOMO for not having an invite
• Confusion over why everyone cares so much all of a sudden
• Fear that the wonderful community I’ve found here on Masto in the last 6 months will die because everyone will leave
• Existential dread over the immense difficulty of managing a community-governed social media platform

Just spent a while unsubscribing from all the random email lists that my personal inbox has gotten flooded with.

I have nothing against mailing lists in principle - I’m a marketer, I have a list that I manage, and I do subscribe to a bunch of lists that I do regularly check and like.

The real problem is three-fold:

1. Assuming consent or tricking users into #marketing emails
2. Sending WAY TOO MANY emails
3. Sending garbage useless promotion with no value

I just discovered that there's a professor of marketing who studies and recently published a book that's literally on the same topic as an upcoming keynote speech of mine.

The hardest part in trying to write about #Threads is figuring out how to compassionately describe both sides of the divide.

On one hand, I’m rooted in the #Fediverse camp and you have all seen me making fun of the cringe and status-chasing on Threads.

On the other hand, I’m a marketer and a long-time lover of many mainstream web spaces. I don’t hate a lot of popular culture. And I missed so many of the people who only now migrated from #Twitter.

So how do I approach this with kindness?
