The whole #Nobel prize situation with Katalin Karikó, who was previously pushed out of #UPenn and forced to become an adjunct would be deeply funny except… I’m all too familiar with the exploitation of being an adjunct professor.

My mother is a literal refugee from #Ukraine who teaches at #Cornell as an adjunct - she STARTED their Ukrainian program. Her classes get over enrolled in within a day with tons of demand. Students love her.

She had to fight for her health insurance 🥲🥲🥲

Both as a #marketer and a big fan of #Mastodon and the #Fediverse I see Threads as a way to preserve existing social hierarchies, decrease the quality of content on the platform, and convince users (yet again) that they should view social media as a place to consume "media”... instead of being "social”

Technology is always a reflection of the society that invents or produces it.

For example, when my mother was trying to buy a dishwasher in Manila back in 2016, she walked around every major electronics store with no luck.

Why? Because in the Philippines, if you could afford to buy a dishwasher, you were rich enough to hire household help.

And with so many poor people who need those types of jobs, if you could afford a maid and didn’t hire one - you were viewed as a greedy, selfish jerk.

I don't blame the Verge for falling into this trap. When they see us (SEOs), they see the people who work in explicitly helping businesses make money online. And they see our role in commercializing the web all too clearly, while missing the other parties who may have also played a part.

But why are we looking for anyone else to blame?

I'm a marketer. I've enjoyed the corporate social media platforms. So you'd look at me year ago, and you'd think: "now, this person would never join #Mastodon, she'd never care about the Fediverse".

But I did join! And I am advocating for the #openweb now.

Honestly, I view myself as an example of somebody that a lot of people on in the Fediverse would have probably given up on. They would have probably not considered me as somebody that could have ever joined or cared. I'm a marketer. So I represent the corporate interests. In many ways. For many people. I am a tech marketer, I've often really enjoyed the corporate social media platforms, like you'd look at me year ago, and you think: "now, like, this person would never join Mastodon, she'd never bother, she would never become an advocate for it". But I did join! I didn't really know what I was getting into. I just wanted to keep up with some people. And now I care a lot and I keep trying to learn more. And I've taught other people about it and people are listening. You get 100 Mariyas out there, and you know that you're starting to make a difference, right? You get 1000 Mariyas out there, you know, something's actually going to happen. It's a movement.
