@clarissadelune that Asian hero was Amaresu (modeled after the Japanese Amaterasu) and is one of the only 2 Heroes that is listed in the cast (aside from Uno) beside Artur Hawkwing (inexplicably listed as Artur Hawkening in the credits [wtf?!]). Birgitte is the silver-haired woman behind Uno. Not sure if the actor for her will be brought back when Birgitte will (if?) be reintroduced later.
@clarissadelune I was also disappointed that this scene didn't appear but I actually can't think of any way that this scene can be depicted on screen without looking cheesy or over the top. As it is, Moiraine's dragon illusion was already looking too much.

Seria "Harry Potter", "Zmierzch" i "Igrzyska Śmierci" - to tytuły, które przychodzą mi na myśl, gdy myślę o książkach, które stały się popularne wśród młodzieży i stanowiły dobry materiał do ekranizacji, osiągając tym samym światowy sukces jako marka. Cykl HP to dla mnie absolutna legenda i ponadczasowa seria (książki, choć filmy też niezłe). "Zmierzchu" czytać i oglądać nie zamierzam. Natomiast chciałem sprawdzić "Hunger Games" i... no tak średnio bym powiedział. Ekranizacji nie widziałem, ale wierzę, że może być dobra. Książka - nie bardzo. To esencja młodzieżówki, ale w tej raczej złej formie. Choć widzę po ocenach na LC, że jestem w tym odosobniony.
@SceNtriC jup, bardziej o to mi chodzi, że gdybym przyszedł do księgarni/biblioteki, poprosił by mi pani zaproponowała coś dla syna/córki z fantastyki młodzieżowej dostając wynik w postaci tak zawężonego YA to pewnie nie tyko bardzo bym się zdziwił ale też następną wizytę odbył w innej księgarni / bibliotece :D
I generalnie - ta etykietka nie zmienia wartości książki. Ale takie etykietki są bardzo pomocne gdy rzucasz pytanie w stylu - hej ludzie, zaproponujcie mi coś w z... Stąd wbrew pozorom znaczenie jest istotne (przynajmniej dla mnie).
I loved SCARLET so much that I read it last night in one sitting then came to work today and grabbed another Cogman, THE INVISIBLE LIBRARY. I didn't know I needed a Scarlet Pimpernel retelling with vampires, but this novel is oodles better than it sounds! What a ripping yarn! @bookstodon#bookstodon#sff#fantasy

@Tim_Eagon I had this game back in the eighties and it's always stuck with me. Probably because it was just a text adventure which as a very young boy, I found disappointing at the time.
I think a larger version of the art was used for a band album sleeve as well.
Tiens, petite réflexion au café sur les "pouvoirs" en #fantasy et leur puissance.
Pendant longtemps j'ai été frileux, en tant qu'#auteur de romans, au sujet des capacités surnaturelles accessibles aux personnages (appelons ça magie). Sans doute à cause d'un passé bien rempli comme meneur en jeu de rôle, j'ai souvent craint que des pouvoirs trop puissants viennent "casser" mon histoire.
Quand on lit le premier chapitre de sa saga The Stormlight Archives - quand on voit un personnage disposer de tant de pouvoirs si puissants dès la première scène -, on se dit : "ce n'est pas possible, il ne peut pas tenir toute une histoire comme ça". Et en fait si, et en fait ça grimpe même bien plus haut que ça.
Tout ça pour dire que, ce matin, je bloque un peu au sujet de la conception d'un pouvoir pour un roman. J'ai été tenté d'abandonner ("trop puissant, intenable"), mais finalement je m'obstine en essayant de suivre la voie de Sanderson.
@leonardbertos@elFlashor Là encore (je suis lourd 😁) c'est l'un des exemples pris par Sanderson dans son essai. Tolkien utilise un système de magie douce parce que les personnages centraux sont les hobbits, et que - en conséquence - ça donne à la magie un aspect incompréhensible, grande et inquiétante, voire effrayante. Et le lecteur s'identifie aux hobbits.
Et comme tu dis, écrire avec Gandalf en protagoniste principal, ça ne pourrait pas fonctionner pareil du tout.

Correction c’est Pratchett qui disait que les ordinateurs c’est de la magie, Oshii disait que quelqu’un qui ne connaît pas la bombe la prendrait pour un dragon.
Last time I asked for #recommendation the results were amazing so here goes another: looking for chapter books for 5-8yo kiddos!
My kid doesn’t read yet but we certainly have a good time when I read them out loud. So far we’ve read the following:
Roald Dahl: Witches, James and the Giant Peach (ongoing), and Charlie and the Choco Factory (lined up)
Harry Potter’s Year One: we have two and three but I’m leaving those for later. Probably after she turns 8 or so (she’s 5 now)
The Little Prince
Genre-wise, we’ve read #Fiction and #Fantasy but anything different would also be great. I’m up for anything that could continue to nurture interest in reading, empathy, wonder, and a good moral compass.

Magic Tree House. Mostly historical at first aside from the tree house, but gets more into magic later in the series. The two main characters are an eight year old boy and his seven year old sister.
Styl Neila Gaimana jest niepodrabialny - nie znam drugiego autora, który by go kopiował (więc pewnie po prostu mało wiem). I co prawda jakoś nigdy nie ekscytuję się, gdy przede mną jest jego książka, ale mimo wszystko zawsze jestem oczarowany po lekturze, bo ten pisarz potrafi tworzyć genialne światy, a raczej rzeczywistość. Często lepszą od bohaterów, ale za to dochodzi do tego dobra, baśniowa historia na granicy światów.
A ja Wam powiem, że odkąd kompletnie przestałem się przejmować tym, że czegoś nie przeczytałem do końca, mam więcej czasu na czytanie tego, co mi się podoba :D
Zaś co do ilości stron/ilości książek - tu też jestem ewenementem, bo czytam wtedy, kiedy mi się zechce :-)

Just finished T. Kingfishers’s “Nettle & Bone”, winner of the best novel Hugo this year, and it was wonderful. Of the nominees I have read two of the others, which were also wonderful, but “Nettle & Bone” stands out in many ways. It takes familiar patterns and turns them in interesting and relevant ways.
Too many #fantasy settings don't put enough thought into the infrastructure of mining. If you have some really big mines - which are popular with fantasy settings for good reasons! - then you need something to power the pulleys, lifts, and (most importantly) the pumps if the mines are in a region with significant amounts of groundwater. Because these mines will be wet by default.
Of course, you could go Steampunk or even Magitech, and use steam power or magical enchantments to power all this infrastructure. But a real world alternative which has been used in the Harz Mountains for centuries is - water power! Yes, that's right, you use water to pump more water out of the mines!
But the thing is, this is going to leave massive marks on the landscape. The Upper Harz has a vast system of ditches and reservoirs created over the centuries which ensured that there was always enough water available to power the mines, and the water always went where it needed to go (and parts of it are still used for electricity generation to this day).
So... if there are some dwarven, goblin, kobold or whatever mines in some nearby mountains, the first clue towards their existence might be some artificial barrier lakes and ditches that channel the flow of water to the mines - and some outflows from the mines as well, carrying the (no doubt toxic) waste with them.
What will be the effect on the human or elven communities downriver? Well, they might not be happy about it - though perhaps the ability to trade with the mines is more important for the local rulers. And such conflicting interests are, of course, great story material...
And once you have mines that are as deep as those of the Harz Mountains - which went hundreds of meters beneath the ground - you need some kind of mechanism, since human(oid) labor simply can't do it by hand any more.
@juergen_hubert The Harz is an amazing source of inspiration for mines! There's a massive network of channels under the mountains for transporting ores and they had a very unique type of ladder elevator when safe wire rope wasn't really a thing yet.
Odświeżyłem sobie niedawno cykl "Sherwood" Packa i naszły mnie dwa spostrzeżenia... i ugryzły w d...uszę.
Jeśli chcesz, żeby obdarowanemu książką było głupio ją sprzedać, to napisz mu dedykację :D
Utrzymałem się w przekonaniu, że "Sherwood" (pierwszy tom, bo cały cykl trudno oceniać przez to, że jest niedokończony), to jedna z najwybitniejszych polskich książek fantasy, którą stawiam na półce obok Wiedźmina.
Nie napiszę, że szkoda, że została wydana pierwotnie w 3.49 (drugie wydanie, w Runie, zyskało znacznie dokładniejszą i lepszą redakcję), bo cholera wie, jak to wszystko potoczyłoby się potem.
Za to szkoda mi, że w 2001 roku, w nominacjach do Zajdla Pacek miał trochę pecha i konkurował z Dukajem i Kresem, co było trudne z kilku powodów, np. niszowości wydawnictwa 3,49 i niewielkiego nakładu.
Zresztą rok później też nie było "lepiej", bo jego "Wrzesień" "musiał" przegrać z "Narrenturm" Sapkowskiego, a konkurencję ponownie miał bardzo mocną, bo znów Kresa i Dukaja, a na dodatek Ziemiańskiego.
Swoją drogą, to były bardzo ciekawe i mocne pod kątem literackim lata dla polskiej fantastyki. Więc znalezienie się w gronie nominowanych takich nazwisk może budzić tylko szacunek.
Podsumowując, jeśli ktoś jeszcze nie miał okazji zapoznać się z Sherwood, to zdecydowanie polecam poszukać gdzieś tej powieści, najlepiej w wydaniu z Runy.

A struggle between a technological kingdom and a magical kingdom would make no sense. The former's engineers would have known from the start that magic was empirically true in that world and incorporated it into their designs.
@mrundkvist Depends on how the magic works, right? Like, if magic requires some kind of human sacrifice, a culture that highly values each person's life might decide to follow a different, non-magical path than one where unhinged wizard-lords happily spill their subjects' blood to get things done.
Jeśli szukacie klasycznego fantasy napisanego w nowoczesnym stylu, to naprawdę polecam Wam tę książkę, która jest wstępem do trylogii. Dla mnie rewelacja. Nie jest idealna literacko i z tego powodu trochę obniżyłem ocenę, ale to jest tak dobre i nieskomplikowane fantasy, że mimo iż to cegła, to ani razu się nie zmęczyłem w tej historii. Wszystko jest tutaj zbilansowane i po prostu... klasyczne. Polecam gorąco fanom starej fantastyki.
@Zenek73 Słyszałem różne opinie o tej książce (głównie pozytywne), więc pewnie spróbuję. Choć gdy kiedyś czytałem opis, to mnie nie porwał i w dodatku to kolejna gruba saga, wymagająca sporo czasu. @ksiazki
