I had to pause my music to write this post, because anything with lyrics pulls me into the song and out of what I'm working on!

And that's something I've wanted to ask you: when you're trying to focus on work, do you put on music WITH lyrics or WITHOUT lyrics?

BONUS: Post your favorite "focus" tracks or albums here and tag us. We're making playlists 🎧

TIL if you middle click on a link in Firefox, it'll open that link in a new tab in the background. Man, I've been wanting this for a long time!

My mouse doesn't have a middle mouse button, but clicking the scroll wheel does the job just fine.

So... I left Evernote months ago when they hiked their pro plan subscription (like 163% !) It was bloated, and their free plan was crippled; that + the company had been struggling for years to find a CEO who could bring some kind of vision back to the app. It all flopped and they were sold to Bending Spoons.

Over the ensuing months, I was fortunate to find a replacement! An Open Source, fully encrypted, Evernote killer. And what a note taking app it has become.

A major release (v3.0) was launched officially today. 8 months of non-stop development and testing by a two-man Dev team has really brought this app center stage. These guys are hands-on with listening to user feedback on their NN Discord server; when they find time to sleep beats me (the plight of the developer).
Read about this latest journey AND all of the great new features of v3.0 that are note-taking game changers, on their blog post:

https://blog.notesnook.com/introducing-notesnook-v3/

You're going to hear more about Notesnook in the weeks and months to come and it won't be coming from me. It will be from a growing userbase that can't help but share the awesomeness that Notesnook brings to notetaking.

Looking for tips about weekly reviews. They are essential for me to ramp up for the new working week but for some reason I've been avoiding them.
Do you do weekly reviews and what do you do to ensure you do them? ;D

There’s no perfect browser. They have to make money and no one wants to charge/pay for products. So we pay with our privacy.

I’m trying @Vivaldi because they’re a top candidate for browsing privacy.

But I didn’t know how much I’d love this browser. Especially their “workspaces” feature. It’s a productivity masterpiece. They also have a built-in translation widget. Two really meaningful features.

It's been a while since I've checked out a new note taking app. What are people usng today?

My most recent experiments were with Joplin, an opensource note-taking app that shows promise, but just hasn't been working for me.

Thoughts?

I asked about what people use for tasks on Mastodon.

Surprisingly many

  • do not use ANY task management and store things in their brain (that's crazy from my perspective)
  • do not use any kind of mobile task management
  • use pen an paper (see two previous)
  • use some hacky terminal/code based task management methods (again, no mobile or cross platform)
  • do not use any time blocking methods (seeing tasks in calendars with estimated times to complete)

I couldn't live my life like that. :blob_smile_sweat2:

Hey , I would like to change the tool I'm using for time tracking (currently Harvest) with something that:

a) works offline and doesn't require server sync.
b) allows me to export/import timesheets in a raw format.
c) works on macOS and/or Linux.

Do you have a favourite?

Thanks 🙏

As we now look to be clearly entering a period of high(er) sustained #interestrates, the Q. must be what will be the consequences?

The FT offers some possible answers:

Consumers (effective) demand will be constrained by servicing #mortgages & household #debt;

#productivity may rise as under-performing firms are bankrupted (unable to service their loans);

states may find fiscal manoeuvrability further constrained due to servicing #publicdebt;

& the #greentranstion may be harder to fund.

Did I accomplish everything on my list this week? No.

But did I prioritize well and make sure the few things that got done were the most important ones? Also no.

But did I at least make a solid effort I can proud of, even if I did not succeed? Again, no.

I recently started using voice dictation on my computer, and it's life-changing.

It's a lot better than it used to be, and it saves me a ton of time.

If you haven't tried it in a few years, try it again. (I'm on a Mac. Can't speak to the Windows experience.)

It's very easy to say that "" is a multiplier and for some people in their work it is.

But we don't really have any studies to see if that's structurally true or whether for example the quick wins you gain from using generated scaffolding are eaten up by extra costs for reengineering, bugfixing or general maintenance later.

And that's just the pure "productivity" (which itself is very hard to measure). The effects on the demands with regards to output quantity, allotted time for task, expected quality haven't been studied yet either.

We. Just. Don't. Know. Yet.

So take these large promises with a shovel of salt.

I have two and a half more orders to complete til I hit the end of my list. I'm still torn if I'll try and promo stuff through the holidays, or just take the break to focus on my mental health through a very difficult season (probably the latter).

But what I really want to do is put up the test yarn for the shawl and get started on that. Alas, I will be a good girl and save that as my reward for finishing orders next week.

Writing friends and prolific note takers. What app are you using these days? I have decided that I don’t like Notion for just writing, and I’m looking for something that has Mac and iOS with a great user experience and online sync. Obsidian is not what I’m looking for when it comes to long from writing and quick notes.

Do I just want Evernote? Is that what I’m seeking?
