Making sausage sandwiches! I'm like a trailblazing culinary genius with this amazing idea I invented!!

I will say I really like the Linda McCartney Red Onion & Rosemary bangers. Proper tasty!

Salad is cool. Salad saves time. Salad saves you money. Salad is good for footprint. Ready prepped in the fridge is awesome for health, exec function, good choices & quick meals. Salad is good rebellion, in lots of ways.

Consider just how many nudges you get in shows, on social, endless ads, pushing towards unhealthy, high profit, low nutrition, high cost, highly processed, high environmental impact, food.

It's ok to rebel. Salad is cool😎

One week induction stove assessment:

  1. Absolutely stellar performance for my use cases, which are
    A. hash browns
    B. boiling water
    C. eggs

  2. Biggest issue:
    A. cookware compatibility

  3. Biggest benefit (aside from energy/no gas burning emissions):
    A. extremely controllable temperature

Note: Getting other folks to try the induction stove did not go well; I am a technology early adopter and willing to experiment, no one else here is. They are comfortable with using what they have used, even if there are issues (lousy burner design here, for one).

End result: Likely will switch at home, might have an interim step with a portable cooktop.

A while ago on the former site I asked people what their favorite easy recipes were and got a ton of great responses. One of the best was Marcella Hazan's tomato sauce, which is so simple you'd almost feel guilty serving it to company but tastes fantastic. Absolute banger to start with if you don't think of yourself as a good cook. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of making it yet, here you go! Also happy to get suggestions of others if you have them

This is the best frozen har gow. It tastes better than many lower end takeout dimsum spots in San Francisco. Just steam or microwave it yourself at home.

I know this because I’ve eaten many bad frozen har gows before finding this one!

so thanks to the lunacy of american traditional i can provide this horrible data:

1/12 tsp ≈ 1 pinch plus one drop

which is to say 1/16th + 1/64th teaspoons

(round 'em a little to make up the shortfall)

which is to say can we please be metric now please i'm begging you save me from this bullshit xD

This one came out iffy but it's mostly my fault. I didn't want this one (missed the chance to pick)

Should have trimmed the green beans better, I added potato water back and shouldn't have, but it tastes good so who cares. I already put some of the potatoes in a tub so it looks unbalanced

DON'T KNOW WHO NEEDS TO HEAR THIS, but the amount of garlic in a recipe is only a suggestion. of the barest minimum, at that.

Today is both the autumn eqinox and time for this:
https://www.skogsmaran.se/
Those passing my window on the finishing 200m are still running (at 12.15)
The less fit will come walking later …
We have had some serious rain this morning, to the extent that even the magpies sat under roof on the patio, so those passing are not only tired but also very wet.

Me? I stay inside preparing meatloaf …

TL;DR: frittata needed!

My niece is getting married next weekend and I have just learned I have been assigned the tast of making frittatas for pre-wedding . I'm a capable home cook, but my partner generally handles all breakfasty-things, so I'm not exactly in my comfort zone here.

Please send me your best frittata and tips, esp. re for a crowd! Assume I'm an idiot.

Thank you!!!

Honestly I've never heard anyone say tofu sucks or that they hated tofu until I moved to the US (lots of crimes against tofu here, especially by vegans and health food people sorry)

I'm and I know food preparation is difficult for many folks in the community.

But learning to feed yourself is a skill that has cascading effects (I get severely depressed if I don't feed myself food I like). Not to mention, not everyone has the $$ for takeout

I've been sending this 'sad bastards cookbook' to everyone https://archive.org/details/sad-bastards-last

It focuses on 'boil water and eat' and 'ingredients that don't go bad'

Instant Brands, owner of the Instant Pot, has filed for bankruptcy. The Takeout has a theory about why the set-it-and-forget-it kitchen gadget got into financial hot water. Are you an Instant Pot fan or do you think it was just a flash in the pan?

My ground beef/etc is never super brown. Do I need higher heat, more cooking time, or what to fix that?

Tastes fine, but doesn't look as good for photos.

Alright, got 13 empty spice bottles, what am I missing?

Only things you actually use/recommend!

I didn't put black pepper, salt, Himalayan salt, or sugar in a bottle. Also not leaving the saffron in a pinch-able tin was probably a mistake but it looked better this way.

So how good is this Sussy Vide stuff anyway? I'm a Lazy Bitch but I always feel like I'm gonna screw up a steak in the oven. I like the concept but it sounds a bit fussy. And obviously I gotta pan sear it too right?

Do you sear then toss it in or finish with a sear? Do you need a special thingy or would I probably just use a pot I already have?

Hey , looking to cook more at home in the new year. Hit me with your best, easy to make and fast recipes. Needs to appeal to a picky 12-year old and ideally to an even pickier 5-year old. Can’t use seafood, as my wife hates it.

Sitting on the porch with neighbors a few weeks ago discussing , one of my favorite people says the best and most reliably delicious cookbook she ever had was Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home. I ordered a copy on Thriftbooks.com and they sent me one with someone else's tabs still all through it, which I love! I wish there were actual written notes. I know that's sacrilegious to some but I write in all my cookbooks. @bookstodon

Welp, no mushrooms with dinner... the packet I got delivered today expired two weeks ago. (This is the third time in as many weeks I've had a well-expired item in my grocery delivery. I called head office and told them if it happens again, I'm going somewhere else).

The smoke detector went off 5 times in the 10 min the salmon was in the air fryer.

All in all, not the relaxing experience I'd hoped that cooking in my new place would be.

But the food was good!

I made tostadas again. This whole gluten/dairy-free thing might work out okay with awesome tostadas like this as a fallback.

Base: Spicy avocado/tomatillo mash, then spiced beef, cabbage, pico de gallo, and tomatillo salsa. Homemade tortillas I just crisped up with some oil in the oven on a tray.

I honestly think the crunch of the tostada makes you go I AM BEHAVING BADLY even though this is an incredibly healthy meal with just 2 tablespoons beef on each.

Love this online recipe hack!
...

If you add “cooked.wiki/“ to beginning of ANY recipe url (before the https:/) it strips away everything but the recipe and organizes the ingredients and method into separate columns.

Also adds a dictation option too!

The same baked oatmeal recipe but run through cooked.wiki. It is now cleaned up and organized like a cookbook with ingredients in a column to the left and the method in a column to the right. Everything else is stripped away.
