Oh man, let me tell you a #GameDev story...

Last night, I received a task to investigate a massive #performance regression in certain parts of the game.

So today I began investigating and ran the latest build on my 4 testing machines. And indeed, the machines that had an #Intel #GPU only achieved ~10% of the FPS they usually had. "Oh no!" I thought, and spent all day profiling and disabling various engine features, but no matter what I did, the performance didn't improve much.

And then I found it. Those Intel machines still had #Mesa DLLs in their build directories from the last time I was investigating a graphics driver issue. Which means they have been using a #software implementation of #OpenGL all this time! :drgn_stare:

I removed the DLLs and the performance returned to normal.

And now I'm back to square one, unable to reproduce the performance issue. :drgn_weary_sob:

Newly declassified US claims Russia is laundering propaganda through Westerners

Alert: Former moscow bathroom robber Vlad Putin and his murderous FSB (KGB) use relationships with traitorous republicans to spread Russian propaganda and disinformation.
Vlad putin doesn't need to bomb the USA, he just buys republicans to destroy America.

Russian intelligence is operating a systematic program to launder pro-Kremlin propaganda through private relationships between Russian operatives and US and western targets, according to newly declassified US intelligence.

US agencies believe that the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) is attempting to influence public policy and public opinion in the West by directing Russian civilians to build relationships with influential US and Western individuals and then disseminate narratives that support Kremlin objectives, obscuring the FSB’s role through Putin shills, hello republicans.

::: System76 developers have managed to DISABLE Intel ME? (A backdoor) :popos:

It is recently claimed that System76's Coreboot open firmware manages now to disable Intel ME for Raptor Lake processor.

Are they on to something bigger towards the realm away from Intel's "Big Brother" practices?

This could be huge in near future! What do YOU think?

The United States has landed another blow to China’s technological advancement, by revoking licenses that allowed Intel and Qualcomm to buy and sell chips to Huawei Technologies, reports @engadget.

Huawei was hit hard when it was placed on U.S. trade restrictions lists in 2019, but a recent comeback — including the launch of an AI-enabled laptop powered by an Intel chip — appears to have renewed the government’s national security worries.

It looks like Intel shuffled registers around again somewhere between skylake (2016) and tigerlake (2020), and the haiku drivers only works by pure luck (reading and writing nonexisting registers, and relying on the bios to setup most things, I guess). So that's yet another thing to fix on the todo list...

pulkomandy,
@pulkomandy@mastodon.tetaneutral.net avatar

I am narrowing down the address range where there's a register that crashes the system by just reading it. I got it down to 32KiB today, I'll continue tomorrow.
If you have an idea which register in intel graphics (gen 11) in the range 60000-64000 may cause that, I appreciate your help!
But I think all other people who might know about this all work at Intel?

It's big, thicc, and chunky, but there are SO MANY things on this Getac I wish I had on "regular" thin laptops...
