Is it just me, or do you see that too? When using the , if you click on a follower the "Follows You" badge at the top left of the profile view (above their avatar) is black text on a nearly-black background?

That's probably not optimal.

Billionaires are giving closed social networks a new hat!

Before people argue that is open, it's not open until there are many different servers that aren't controlled by Bluesky.

Before people argue that is open, it's not open until they implement ActivityPub (and in a fair way rather than embrace, extend, extinguish)

We've yet to see if they will actually be open.

, , , , , and others in the are actually open today.

Simpsons episode "Lisa vs Malibu Stacy" with a kid pointing at a "new" Malibu Stacy. It's captioned, "They changed closed social networks that lock you in! They're better than ever!"
Simpsons episode "Lisa vs Malibu Stacy" with Lisa taking the hat off Malibu Stacy. It's captioned "Wait, don't be fooled! It's just a regular closed social network with a stupid new overlord."
Simpsons episode "Lisa vs Malibu Stacy" with Smithers pointing and saying "But it's got a new overlord!"

Are there any apps/interfaces that can filter who you follow, or hashtags to specific lists and at the same time exclude them from the default feed?

Apropos of nothing: scrolling through the entire federated timeline on is a LOT more rewarding when you’re on an instance that actively blocks spam, scams and hate before you see it.

I've never had such good engagement on a social media platform before.

I'm not one to care or track this shit either - but damn, it's nice to ask a question or share something and it's not just crickets 🦗 My recent language question got boosted through the roof and received so many helpful replies (Thanks 💚)

This is also proving that solo instances can work - My feed is always buzzing (Added a couple of relays to help there) and my posts seem to be reaching folk.

Dear users and admins, what is the good practice for supporting languages on instances? Is it normal to ask your admin to add more languages if you want to write multilingual posts and tag them correctly? // CC @admin

NerdyKeith, to threads
@NerdyKeith@mstdn.social avatar

Threads may seem like it's doing well for now. If I could join it, I still wouldn't. The fact that the EU won't approve it should worry people. The EU has been unable to determine how this app will protect user data privacy. That's a red flag. I'll be sticking to Mastodon for microblogging and might consider BlueSky when it's fully available.

And honestly I could do without another Zuckerberg product.

mmilak,

@broximar In comparison to where your content is largely dependent on algorithms spoon-feeding it to you, relies on its to find new people and follow their content.

In that regard, I'd say you're a lot closer here to making a real friend than just 'someone from Mastodon'. 😁

So I’ve started making videos and an entire playlist discussing and the fediverse for regular people. Its funny to see how people really believe the hype. Most people I know who are really into it don’t know much about technology I am noticing. Because anyone into tech and social media starts seeing cracks with their approaches.

If you can't understand how people can escape one corporate social media () just to sign up for the next one (, ,...) and call that an improvement, then you are looking at the wrong thing.

You see a hellhole run by a demon overlord, they see a platform of fresh opportunities, makings them a promise, doesn't: grow here and you can earn money (bring in your friends!). Grow a lot and you can make a living out of it.

It's the internet version of Tupperware parties

@Teri_Kanefield Great post, thank you. I like following you because your posts are informed & dont seek to generate emotional reactions.

The second reason is also why I have stayed on Mastodon after leaving Twitter in Nov 2022. I think my preference now is to not learn news immediately but let things play out and digest them (i.e. less breaking news, more analysis).

Honestly, you have to compare that with the fact that you first have to create an account, so you also first have to enter a phone number, aso...
