Some words about Mastodon moderation:

  1. It’s hard. No decision is easy and there’s lots of gray area even with explicit rules.
  2. We’ll sometimes debate for a long time on a single post. We do our best to make the right call.
  3. Even so, we sometimes make mistakes. We’re willing to accept appeals when that happens.
  4. We get a lot of things right. You can’t even imagine some of the traumatic things we see.

Why are there so many stop signs on American streets?

I'm from the UK where in general there's only a stop sign if it's needed, such as a junction where you can see absolutely nothing on one side. Otherwise usually there's a give way line instead, to let people slow the car right down to look, but not need to stop if it's unnecessary....

My protocol (assuming you have done all the wildfire pre-prep earlier in the season). 1. Applies to RED FLAG or near RED FLAG (ie. windy, dry) conditions ONLY. I pay attention other times, but not as much. 2. Pay attention to National Weather Service forecasts, and READ THE NOTES. You want to be aware of direction of wind, timing, and where the biggest threats are. If it's not a RED FLAG, I am not as worried, at least in SoCal (lots of firefighting resources). (cont)

Good thing I double check the now banished contractor's work. Apparently they have never seen a compression fitting in their life.

Bubbles on a gas line = bad. Brand new yellow line
More blue Teflon on a compression fitting

Not letting people use bathrooms is unethical.

I find it disturbing that capitalism takes and creates wealth and then outsources the problems it creates to us.

I was at a restaurant (pay at counter) type, and my meal was like $35. And I had to pee. But they told me the “restroom is out of order”. But it wasnt because i saw employees use it.

Thoughts? This is happening across all states.

Bank fraud is on the rise.

Remember:
• Use only one credit card for online shopping, and never use a debit card.
• Shred your financial information; don’t simply throw it out.
• Never give out personal information to anyone contacting you through unsolicited phone calls or emails.

Researchers Suggested a Way to Make Big Safer.

After Meeting With Lobbyists, Agency Officials Rejected the Idea.

The Department of Transportation allowed lobbyists to review an unpublished report recommending a device that could save lives by preventing & from getting crushed under large trucks.

“PLEASE delete any mention of a recommendation to develop … any regulation,” the DOT supervisor wrote in an email.

Did you know that road design included features?

In the ruins of , you'll notice small white stones interspersed with the large paving ones along the extensive roads.

Those white are 'cats eyes', i.e. gems that have a single line of inclusion of crystals of another mineral inside.

Upon light reflective on them (from the ), they enable the walker to see that they are still on the right path!

Random comment (which won't get to the college aged girl that needs to hear it, or would even be listened to): riding your bicycle/ebicycle with your hair flowing in the wind may make you feel free and happy, but if you crash on the hill out here, it will also make you (or crippled for life). .

Determined a likely earthquake disaster location (in my kitchen) today, after an entire shelf collapsed full of vinegar and condiments (on my head). Plastic shelf supports finally degraded enough and had a massive failure. Luckily, no broken bottles, no injuries. (also... the granite countertop sure is squeaky clean after all that vinegar was wiped up 🤔 ). Will need to replace all of the rest of the shelf supports with metal ones, at least.

I spotted this somewhat alarming sight above a second storey window while out and about on Wallace Street in Glasgow today. I really hope that rope holding the loose keystone in place is stronger than it looks.

The keystone for the first storey window directly below it is in a similar state, but has nothing at all keeping it in place!

Drivers hate them, and they're also dangerously distracting. Buttons and knobs are poised for a comeback.

A day or so ago I very nearly spilt water on this fairly new Mac, which would have really, really, REALLY been bad news. Really.

Going to need to see if I can really function with it though. Definitely gets in the way... hmm...
