Amused at how Altman helped himself to a woman who denied him multiple times, because he was fond of her*, and despite the fact that she was literally the only person in recent history to sue Disney and win - and that no one else in his circle tried to dissuade him (or had enough pull or made enough effort to be successful).

About a dozen others were injured. A witness described the ongoing attack on the camp; "They are shooting everything."

North Carolina's House has rejected the anti-mask bill! The bill will now go through a compromise process, which could include re-adding a health exemption.

More work needs to be done, but this shows that advocacy is making a difference. Keep going!

15 years ago, the Greens started warning that we needed to start preparing and planning the transition from coal to renewable energy.

The Libs responding by gaslighting and saying things like “You can’t shut down coal energy overnight!”, something the Greens were in no way shape or form asking for.

The media simply quoted the Libs. Their excuse? “We WeRe JuSt TeLlInG yOu WhAt ThEy SaId!”. Never quoted what the Greens actually wanted, or actually analyzed the situation, just QuOtEd WhAt ThEy SaId! The Liberals and those talking complete and utter horse shit. While burying their heads in the sand about energy transition.

Now, we’re in a situation where coal plants are shutting down ahead of the 15 years ago schedule, renewable sources have been delayed massively, and many don’t have power lines heading to them nor are connected to the grid properly. We are in the EXACT problem situation the Greens were warning about 15 years ago.

The media won’t take responsibility for their one-sided citing and TeLlInG yOu WhAt ThEy SaId. They’ll just write articles pretending that never happened, glossing over their part in it.

We’re in for hard times. All caused by the Liberal governments of the last 15 years. And Labor especially now aren’t exactly any better. And caused by the media failing to do their actual jobs.

Gas appliances are more than a issue and the estimated societal cost of $1B annually would buy a lot of induction stoves:

“We found that gas and propane stoves may contribute up to 19,000 adult deaths annually in the United States. We also estimated that long-term NO2 exposure from gas and propane stoves is responsible for approximately 50,000 current cases of pediatric asthma.”

Derelict satellites pass within 1,000 kilometers of each other 1,000 times a year, and any collision would instantly double the amount of space debris. A space rush is filling up orbit with unregulated satellites, mostly from private companies, and we need better protections https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/there-is-too-much-trash-in-space/

Here comes a thread on light pollution from satellites, with a concrete action that you all can take to help push for regulation of satellites in orbit!

Astronomers have been worried about light pollution from satellites (if you've been following me for more than 24 hours, you've perhaps heard a bit about this). Astronomers spent SO much time and effort begging and pleading with Starlink to make their satellites fainter, with mixed results.

sundogplanets,
@sundogplanets@mastodon.social avatar

A group of concerned astronomers, artists, and policy experts have come together and formed Kessler Rebellion. Our goal is to educate the public about what's happening in orbit and advocate for regulatory changes that will avoid Kessler Syndrome, which would destroy our ability to use satellites in Low Earth Orbit for decades to centuries.

What good is AI if you don't have a planet to use it on?

Microsoft released its 2024 Sustainability Report on Wednesday, and it's mostly bad news. Last year, Microsoft's emissions went up 29%, and it used 23% more water, primarily due to "new technologies, including generative AI."

23% more water!!!

29% more emissions!!

In ONE YEAR??

This is the most insane increase in environmental damage in one year that I have seen in a long time.

If this were a power plant, we would be demanding EPA shut it down until pollution controls were in place. Same should happen with Microsoft.

So now SpaceX, with no working spacesuit, and years behind on it's multi-billion dollar moon lander, is lobbying NASA to go to the Hubble Space Telescope.

"A successful private mission could improve Hubble's ability to point at celestial objects and, by boosting its orbit, extend its life by years... however, an accident could leave the multibillion-dollar telescope broken — or, even more tragically, tethered to the dead bodies of the astronauts sent to repair it."

Starlink is killing Hubble

Something about this plan to move Hubble, didn't make sense. If the space telescope still has 10 years of useful life, why this risky SpaceX mission to boost it's orbit now?

Well it turns out the main thing threatening the utility of Hubble is... wait for it... SpaceX Starlink satellites, which orbit just above Hubble constantly "photo-bombing" the images. Within a few years there will be so many Starlinks that Hubble will be useless.

is currently the lowest-cost location for producing all of these five key clean technologies."

@CelloMomOnCars There is plenty to criticise China about but being ahead in renewable technology is not one of them, this should be read as an indictment of Western nations who should be doing more.
