The "New Outlook" demands that when adding your account, you also give Microsoft a copy of all your Gmail email, contacts, and calendar data.

The "Learn More" link confirms:

"Syncing your account to the Microsoft Cloud means that a copy of your email, calendar, and contacts will be synchronized between your email provider and Microsoft data centers."

WOW.

Good time to switch to @thunderbird, folks!

It takes 12,000 plays on Spotify for a band to make the same as you buying one of their T-shirts.

My debut EP is FINALLY ready for your ears! It's an emotional, melodic journey through love, loss, and personal demons, but wrapped in a catchy, cathartic rock & roll package.

I think you're gonna love it!

It's available at 10 days ahead of streaming platforms, and each $4 purchase also bundles in the original demos of each song. Turn it up, sing along, and rock out!

"On June 24, 1993, Severe Tire Damage became the first band to livestream a concert on the internet.

The band subsequently began live streaming every Wednesday night. Viewers of the weekly streams could change the camera angle, adjust the audio mix, and even control a fog machine in the band’s basement."

(via https://neal.fun/internet-artifacts/)

THIRTY YEARS LATER and we still can't do that shit with livestreamed concerts. This band was WAY ahead of its time!

I still adore this screenshot.

Also, some interesting @thunderbird trivia: In 2004, blazing fast internet access wasn't nearly as widespread as it is now, so Mozilla offered to send installation CD-ROMs to users for $5.95.

Groan
And so it begins in full force.

Today, both Mailchimp and Hootsuite (very popular tools which I happen to use for @thunderbird newsletters and social media) invited me to use to compose Facebook posts, tweets, and emails, respectively.

I won't be using AI tools for writing. But you should know that it's starting to get exponentially more difficult knowing if the content you're absorbing is from a human or from something like .

I don’t know how to feel about the situation. It certainly doesn’t decrease my disdain for Epic Games, and I’m disgusted by Songtradr’s stance of “supporting the band camp community is our top priority but let’s fire half the staff.”

But what’s the alternative? Isn’t it the only well-known music platform that doesn’t screw over musicians? Are there other places where I can launch a vinyl release for no upfront cost? Control my pricing?

Musicians need to take back this industry. how?

I really don't understand how people tolerate . I booted back into my Windows 11 install tonight, and it was a total shit show.

AMD graphics driver needed to update, but it couldn't because there was a Windows update pending. When that finally finished and I rebooted, the graphics driver update took a solid 15 minutes (I have gigabit internet...)

And then the ads: "Try Xbox Game Pass!" "Turn on your OneDrive backup!"

Meanwhile, the system is running SO SLOW compared to Kubuntu.

So here's a quick life update:

  1. Yep, I've relocated back to the USA, and I'll probably be based in California for the time being.

  2. I just submitted my last invoice for marketing services to @thunderbird... because beginning tomorrow I'm a full-time employee of MZLA Technologies Corporation, and no longer a contractor! 🎉 🎉

(I'll even have my own team, woot!)

  1. Moving 6000 miles across the world is a lot to process, and I may not be as present here until I find some stability.

"Everyone talks about the privacy-washing (new window) campaigns of Google and Apple as they mine your online data to generate advertising revenue. But now it looks like Outlook is no longer simply an email service(new window); it’s a data collection mechanism for Microsoft’s 772 external partners and an ad delivery system for Microsoft itself."

The coolest booth award -- and most genius donation method -- goes to NUCC (National Upcycled Computing Collective).

They took this soda machine and transformed it into a massive server from reclaimed and refurbished server racks. They even wrote a whole thing to do the transactions.

You stick dollar bills in, select which "flavor" you want, and it pops out a shell for you to access all weekend from the show.

(You can check out their projects at https://www.nuccinc.org/)

Going forward, when I'm talking about or sharing my own music, I'll use the hashtag .

I hope you follow that hashtag, because I plan to rock your socks off! 🤘🤘

(But I totally understand if you want to filter out the noise -- hashtags can also be muted.)

Here's a preview of the first finished song on the upcoming EP! Boosts sincerely appreciated.

Major labels get more profit, smaller indie labels and unsigned artists get less.

"A new threshold of minimum annual streams that a track must meet before it starts to generate royalties. The threshold, according to MBW, will de-monetize tracks that had previously received 0.5% of Spotify’s royalty pool."

From now on when people ask that classic question "So, what do you do?" my answer will be "I'm a musician. I just happen to support that pursuit with a full-time marketing job."

When you meet someone, tell them who you truly are, not what you do to pay the bills.

As of today, I am no longer subscribed to any streaming music platforms. I dropped Spotify last year, and today I dropped Tidal.

I have an awesome and growing vinyl collection. I ripped all my CDs and have my entire digital music library on both my iPod and Plex.

I'm content with this decision. In fact I'm EXCITED about it, because I'll be spending more time enjoying and loving the heaps of music I already own.

As for discovery? Recommendations, Bandcamp, and good old fashioned music blogs.

I haven't talked much about my day job, but now feels like the right time since I recently moved away from management back into a content + community-driven role at @thunderbird.

As successful as the Thunderbird project is, there's a lot of room for us to improve our community engagement, whether that's creating a more welcoming environment for new contributors OR just being a fun "third place" for our users.

What do YOU think is missing right now? What can we do better? 👂
