There is no precedent for what is happening now in Canada. The ongoing forest fires are obliterating all previous records. No matter which chart or graph you look at below, the message they send is shocking and alarming.

Canadian wildfires have burned more than 10 million hectares (24.7 million acres) this year, a record-breaking figure that has surpassed scientists' most pessimistic predictions, government data showed Saturday.

The prior all-time high occurred in 1989, when 7.3 million hectares were burned over the course of an entire year, according to national figures from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC).

The area burned this year, in just six and a half months, is roughly equivalent to the size of Portugal or Iceland.

Bar graph shows seasonal areas burned in Canadian wildfires, comparing 2023 to a 10-year average. Current area burned this year is already more than five times the average at this point in the fire season.
Bar graph shows annual area burned in Canada from 1983 to 2023. Never before has the total reached 10 million hectares, but this year's burned area is already there. Previous high was about 7 million hectares.

In the last days of 2023 I launched the sticker collection "Moss covering objects of our time" and shared it only here on . I couldn't have chosen better. The reactions and orders I received gave me energy that will last throughout 2024. Thank you for that.

I've been arguing for years that "carbon offset payments" (and CO2 certificate trade in general) is modern sale of indulgence, and thus fraud, now look who supports my stance: https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/16/murder-offsets/#pulped-and-papered

Letting kids plant mono cultural commercial forests under the guise of environment conversation is an especially evil plot even I wouldn't have expected, though.

Two giant ancient oak trees in their autumn colours on a muggy morning.

The tree in the background is a good 700 years old and may be up to 1000 years old. I'm not sure how old the tree in the foreground is, but it won't be much younger.

We are surrounded by forests where I live -- in -- so we do a lot of shinrin yoku (forest bathing). I hope you enjoy this addition to my collection of artwork featuring the sun and trees.

Top is a painting (Louise J. Rayner) c1900, bottom is my photo from last week.
Such a beautiful city, this bridge takes you up the hill to the castle and cathedral, got to be one of my favourite places in the UK.

When you understand that under capitalism,

a forest🌳🌲🌴🍃 has no value until it is cut down,

you begin to understand the root of our ecological crises
