After a couple of days of not noticing any hummingbirds, a new one showed up, maybe a calliope. It, or maybe the rufous, was busy checking all the places for spider webs so it must be working on it's nest.

In this video it was chased off by the one I hadn't seen for a few days.

A short video showing a hummingbird at a feeder, another hummingbird appears hovering briefly before it moves in to get close and chase the one at the feeder away.

Serendipitous shot of this speedster. It was completely unafraid of me and my phone. After it finished its feeding, it buzzed up in my face (to challenge me?) before zooming off!

My sweet hummingbird who stayed in the near garden started Jan 5 seems to have migrated... I checked my notes & she came & went about the same time last year so I won't blame the terrible hailstorm we had the other night...

This collage is from 2023, we didn't have anywhere near as many Rufous this year in my yard

My lazy gardening practices have been rewarded today! My dead Japanese anemones (from my mom’s garden) went to seed and produced all this fluff. The hummingbirds are grabbing little puffballs of it to make nests with. This makes me so happy. I’m watching this little mama to see if I can find where her nest is. Rock on little mama bird - fare thee well.

woke up at first light, it was 28 deg F- ran out to put up hummingbird feeders & a hummingbird (I think the same one I photo'd yesterday!) immediately came for the goodies--

at this temp the sugar molecules will keep the sugar water from freezing.... much cooler, & i keep back a feeder to swap out when the other one starts to freeze...

it warms my heart to know they're watching us & think at least some of us can be relied on

"my garden is crispy frozen & i blame you"-- nonetheless, this hummingbird spent the night in the garden (i saw where she perched) so she'd be here at first light for first drink from the feeders

It's not a technically good photo but one of my favorite photos for 2023 is this first try at a hummingbird in the rain called, "A light in a dark forest"

When it comes to mind-bending aerial manoeuvres, it turns out hummingbirds can give Top Gun’s Maverick a run for his money.

Researchers have discovered that the diminutive creatures, native to north America, have two different strategies they can deploy to squeeze through gaps that are smaller than their wingspan.
