Art

Hey folks!

Please do NOT report artists for sharing links to where their art is available to purchase!

Just DO NOT be such a jerk!

If you want artists to keep sharing their work on mastodon, this whole "absolute no commercial posts at all" attitude has to stop. There is a huge difference between a big corporate ad campaign and an individual artist posting a link to their own art shop.

Edit/Update: Well, this blew up. I'm muting now, and won't see replies.

Willow,

@kristinHenry
Nothing wrong with sharing art. Also nothing wrong with not wanting your feed filled by people using it as a free advertising space. Can't imagine why someone would report it. If you don't want it, block it and don't feel bad about it. Other people might want to see ads, but you don't have to if you don't want to.

Folks who do this have zero comprehension that commerce and capitalism are not the same damn things.

Hey there. In short I'm looking for potential donors as I need a live liver transplant. I've set up a bunch of information and links over at - https://ginpuliver.carrd.co/

Even if you cannot help me directly, please share this with others. There is bound to be someone out there that can help.

Thank you all in advance.

@Sheril Description (Alt Text) can be improved a bit. All these white men are formally look the same, but behave very differently.
What seems to be common for all them that all they see this interview as a boring chore.
One read his phone, other, sleep, other sit in informal pose.
What is common between them is that they do not want anyone join to their organization. What they dream about is this formality to end sooner.
Such picture happens in frozen and dead organizations. (large corp & gov).

First I retooted the Pliny the Elder toot and thought “hmm kinda weird”. But then a few scrolls later I came across your toot and thought “oh my god wow this is perfect” and retooted it right away, and now I have this perfect mashup on my timeline of a toot warning about weird shadows literally followed by toot about weird shadows 🤓

These works by the Finnish artist Anni Laukka are amazing and, when you realise what they’re made of, even more gut-wrenching: these are all toys and nursery items collected from bombed Ukrainian homes. 1/2

(Wäinö Aaltonen museum, Turku)

Toys and nursery items in a carefully created shape are lit from two sides, throwing shadows on the walls. One is a tank, another shows four soldiers shooting.

I absolutely adore the whimsical of 3D sidewalk chalk artist David Zinn. https://zinnart.com

Zinn creates delightful “works of ephemeral pareidolic anamorphosis” inspired by weeds, sewer covers, traffic cones & nearly everything he encounters around his Ann Arbor community.

HEY!!! Before you start buying holiday gifts and giving all your money to billionaires, here's a suggestion: This holiday season choose small, high quality, customized, unique gifts from artists here on Mastodon. There many amazing people here making paintings, prints, plushies, clothes and more (I do jewellery and songs).
You can find out our work through the hashtags:

Help others find our work through reblogging our toots starting with this one. ❤️

@skaly That's a great idea. I have a small business too but have struggled to promote it on Mastodon as many servers forbid promoting your business. How do other owners manage that?

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@callunavulgaris @skaly I find that attitude very unfortunate and I hope the conversation evolves. IMO the Fediverse can and should support small business owners especially those who are also active outside of self-promotion. I have no prob with straight up self promo either but when it comes to people who are actively part of the discussion/community AND have a small business - I would like those people to be fully supported here. Just my $0.02

Alicircles,

Hey I'm Alicia, an artist who really hasn't been feeling social media lately (especially IG and FB) so I thought I'd try Mastodon out and see if I like the simplicity of it more. I think I picked the perfect server, since I'm much more likely to be in my sunny garden than anywhere else. :BlobCat_Love: 🌞

My interests include
and making.

I have a family business called Fibre2Fabric where we dye all sorts of fibre, yarn, and fabric and I want to get into clothes some more!

Hope I get to meet some cool people the algorithm would drown out on other apps.

Anyway, welcome and don't be afraid to ask for help. 👋

THEIR EXPERIENCE OF REJECTION IS THE ARTWORK

For the last 4 years, the Tasmanian Museum of Old and New Art has been running an installation called The Ladies Lounge. Only people who identify as ladies are allowed to enter. In the lounge, they can sit in luxury and look at famous artworks by Picasso etc, which are not available elsewhere in the museum. They are served champagne and pampered by male butlers. It was meant as a comment on exclusionary men's clubs (which still exist in Australia and elsewhere).

Some dude got upset about it and sued the gallery for entry at the anti-discrimination tribunal. The artist, Kirsha Kaechele, said she was "absolutely delighted" that the exhibit had been taken to court. “The men are experiencing Ladies Lounge, their experience of rejection is the artwork,” she said.

She then turned the tribunal hearing into part of the art as well, by having a group of women observing the hearing dress like her and mimic her every move. They did not disrupt the hearing, and at the end of proceedings they exited the tribunal to the song Simply Irresistible.

Kaechele argued in her defence the Ladies Lounge was a “a response to the lived experience of women forbidden from entering certain spaces throughout history” and promoted equal opportunity.

The tribunal found against the gallery and is ordering them to allow men to enter the exhibit. MONA is removing the exhibit instead.

Fucking love this artist 😂

@fullfathomfive Love the double-take mental image of the Robert Palmer 'Simply Irresistible' video that had a male lead singer with a vapid-looking backup band, except that Palmer was the pretty face and the female band had the serious musical chops.

agenderfox,
@agenderfox@babka.social avatar

@fullfathomfive I'd love to know how many people who don't normally identify as women claimed to do so in order to view this exhibit. bc transphobes are screaming that this happens constantly, and this seems like the lowest-stakes "ID as a woman to access women's spaces" scenario out there

like, it's ridiculous to think that a serious man athlete would take hormones to permanently alter his body and then spend months/years being referred to as the wrong name and pronouns simply to compete in women's sports but that a random Australian man wouldn't walk up to an exhibit and say "I identify as a lady" to look at some art and then never see any of the ladies/butlers who had been there again
