It looks incredible. (qv "Schedule")

I'm bummed I'm only learning about this now, and that I can't travel due to health reasons, and also there's still a pandemic ongoing. But while they're not live streaming it, they are making recordings which I'll probably buy.

👉 had been warning about IoT (in)security for years.
👉 Hackers had been raising alarm about phone network insecurity for almost two decades.
👉 Hackers had been insisting, since 1990's, that any entity that gathers personal information protects it well.

But sure, blame everything on hackers:

  • "hackers break into <some IoT boondoggle>"
  • "hackers abuse SMS to break into <a service>"
  • "hackers leak <some entity's ridiculously badly protected> data." 🤦‍♀️

Because clicks must flow. 🙄

Statement from — the Polish train manufacturer that sabotaged its competition by DRMing its trains — deliberately abuses the word "hackers" to paint a picture of some cybercriminals taking over the trains.

Newag is doing this on purpose, to deflect blame and muddy the waters.

And a lot of media just walks right into this, repeating and boosting the bullshit narrative simply by parroting that misuse of that term.

Words matter.

Managed to track down a CBS news segment on hackers from August of 1985. It covered #hacking credit records via compromised TRW accounts, hackers on ARPANET, #hacker BBSes, a brief interview with Richard Sandza, a Newsweek journalist who was harassed by #hackers because of articles he wrote exposing aspects of the computer underground of 1984 and some brief interview segments with various anonymous hackers.

No, dear friend. Hackers try to hack everyone indiscriminately. Therefore, it is necessary to protect your data.

I also just love this quote

But after the 2018 HOPE, the Hotel Pennsylvania was demolished to make way for the Penn15 (no, really) skyscraper, a vaporware mega-tower planned as a holding pen for luxury shopping and empty million-dollar condos sold to offshore war-criminals as safe-deposit boxes in the sky. The developer, Vornado (no, really) hasn't actually done all that – after demo'ing the Hotel Pennsylvania, they noped out, leave a large, unusable scar across midtown.
