Montréal suburb Brossard has a traffic light in a school zone that defaults to red, and only turns green when an attached speed camera detects a car driving under the speed limit.
The light is on a 90-day trial, on a 2-lane residential street. Similar signals are widespread across Europe.
Before it was installed, average vehicle speeds of 40 km/h. But in the past week, average speeds have dropped to 29 km/h.
On the 25th of December, there will be a free meal served from 1pm to 7pm in #Montreal, Canada in NDG. It is intended for anyone who is poor, homeless, lonely, low income, or otherwise in need. We've been running this dinner since around 1988. We typically serve over 1000 meals.
The meal consists of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cooked vegetables, gravy, and cranberry sauce. Dessert, coffee, and juice is also available. A few other dishes can occasionally be found too.
Oh no! Look at all these Old Montréal businesses not generating any profit because of the streets being closed for cars. Utterly devastating move by the city to prevent people from accessing these businesses by having nowhere to park. How dare they doom the economy like this?
It's hard to describe the startling QUIET of these open streets. Hundreds of people out, and all you hear are birds singing, the click of a bike mechanism, and the murmur of conversation. Cities aren't loud, cars are loud. #Montreal#OpenStreets
What a difference a day makes! Yesterday was a cold but lovely late fall day in Montreal's Lafontaine Park, today it was snowy, wet & colder. #park#Montreal#Canada#autumn#snow
This is the best overview of Montreal I’ve ever seen from an urbanism and transit perspective. Very well researched and an honest appraisal of the situation.
Some of you are aware of the ongoing TA #strike at #McGill, and it pains me to see the administration is succeeding in actively dividing undergraduates, graduate #students, and #professors alike, by pushing all three to the absolute mental limit. We - and by that I mean all three above - must NOT let the administration tear the social fabric in our #university to put money before people. When the #union says "united we bargain, divided we beg," it means not just them, but everyone. 1/
I fell asleep in a dark, wet evening and woke up early this morning to this winter wonderland.
When I first opened my eyes it reminded me of that moment when Lucy steps through the wardrobe into Narnia ❄️
Memorial: 14 lights beam into the sky from Montreal's Mount Royal to mark the 34th anniversary of the 14 women massacred by a gunman at École Polytechnique on December 6th, 1989. The anniversary has become the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada. #memorial#ViolenceAgainstWomen#Montreal#EcolePolytechnique#women#Canada#UofM
Another urban freeway is getting tossed into history's scrap heap. Good riddance!
#Montreal: Bonaventure Expressway, which runs along the St. Lawrence River, to be replaced by urban boulevard featuring bike path, green space.

BREAKING: #Montreal breaks with decades of tradition to launch the hole-free bagel. Available at St-Viateur Bagel for the next 2 weeks. aka The Unholy Bagel … What a time to be alive…
Remember Conservative leader Pierre #Poilievre's threatening comments when he recently declared Quebec mayors were incompetent?
👉 More than 20% of the municipal mayors and councillors elected in #Quebec in the last election have quit. Nearly 800 officials have stepped down citing the hostile political climate.
"Bike infrastructure can work wonders for most of the year, and having it used less frequently for a few winter months doesn’t negate its need...a city that encourages year-round cycling helps normalize it."
