I forget that men are also victims of the gender wars. Dr. Ted Johnson wrote a thoughtful and beautiful essay about this issue.

“The politics of masculinity have become a central focus of the right wing, which accuses progressives of waging a war on men. On the left, “toxic masculinity” is blamed for the exaggerated displays of such antisocial masculine attributes as hardness and violence.”

I have made it available for all to read.

After giving a spin, playing where you can only select "Man" or "Woman"; and there being a "bearded" slider which... simply exists but is disabled for the latter option, the game really does feel clunky/boring/backwards in terms of things.

For context, Tiny Life elegantly completely solves this problem by actually never asking for gender or "sex". You can either bear children or impregnate, or neither. You also can choose whether your voice is "warm" or "soft" plus a slider for the pitch. Everything is independent of those options, beard, hair, etc.

Since Valheim to my knowledge doesn't even have sex, it could just go with sliders for body shape and voice. Done, no need for encoding any gender.

Ursula K. Le Guin discussing her regrets about not using more gender-neutral language in her book 'The Left Hand of Darkness', the significance of pronouns, and the grammatical accuracy of the singular 'they':

"English has a truly ungendered pronoun only in the plural. He, she, and it are gendered, they is not. [...] Historically, and colloquially, they has been regularly used as an ungendered or bisexual singular."

fringemagnet,

Since my post on Ursula K. Le Guin's approach to gender-neutral pronouns and her being firmly in support of the singular 'they' is still getting some traction, it's also worth sharing this long but definitely interesting interview to The Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) from 2017 where she revisits the subject, among several other things.

An (incomplete) map / list of and their system. It is interesting to see that many languages don't have the grammar to address different (social) genders via . Others use gender to distinct between other things (e.g., human vs. animal vs. plant vs. thing). IMHO, looking at all these different concepts of gender is very important when trying to make languages more inclusive.

I've been working at this theater on and off for 30 years. In that time I've played multiple genders; I've also played kangaroos, weasels, and chairs. There's never been an agenda, other than if a part needs playing and you're not on stage, you do it. But some Spring Branch Becky flipped the fuck out and went on a gender war.

Most parents didn't even realize why the field trip was canceled.

For my latest update, I spoke with an employment lawyer, a former law educator turned senior attorney for Lambda Legal, and + advocates about why this dress code opens the department up to serious legal liability, and how decades of precedent suggest it could easily be ruled discriminatory: https://www.texasobserver.org/sid-miller-dress-code-transphobia-texas-agriculture/
