1/34 This started out as a much shorter thread about a related topic, but Something Happened and now it's a thread on keeping your house comfortable and saving and the , through the magic of air movement. It's also timely, what with it being the start of the northern-hemisphere summer and southern-hemisphere winter.

Reminder that RedHat makes A LOT of money already. The results of the 2019 fiscal year show that RedHat spends twice as much money on ads and sales people than on developers. (www.businesswire.com)

Our subscriptions mostly pay for the salesmen and the ads. They sell ads first, IT second. So I'm not gonna cry for RedHat. The image of the poor developers working in a cave, struggling to make money is only in our mind. They had a perfectly functional model but decided to sabotage some of it to try to squeeze even more money....

Steve Keen discusses the money creation mechanisms here https://profstevekeen.substack.com/p/why-are-economists-trying-to-hide

A thing I think he doesn't give enough attention to is the role the Fed DOES play. The Fed indirectly controls bank lending rate through a couple mechanisms. The first is whatever rules it has for declaring a bank solvent. They've eliminated reserve requirements but now it's something like a stress test or whatever. A bank can't keep lending

🆕 blog! “Why is there no OpenBanking API for personal use?”

The recent news that MoneyDashboard is suddenly shutting down has exposed a gap in the way OpenBanking works. It is simply impossible for a user to get read-only access to their own data without using an aggregator. And there are very few aggregators around. Why is it impossible for me to get programma…

Fair point - if you're not using digital payments, you should make the effort to get used to them. Cash is (mostly) going away. (This article also contains a guide to getting started with digital.)

Cash is dead. Why are we still pretending it isn’t?

Not only is the Big Short guy (yes, that guy) betting heavily against the market again, but he's so confident about it that the contract value is 1.6 billion, or seen another way,

fully 93% of his entire investment portfolio.

EDIT: though the source is really fishy.

Forced cashless society.

Our nearby small market town used to have 3 banks; they're all closed (taking their cash machines with them), and this week one of the two remaining cash machines was removed from the supermarket where it was located.

So, we're down to a single cash machine in an area with a radius (I'm guessing) of around 20 miles.

The cashless society doesn't represent consumer choice, its pace is being forced by financial institutions keen to charge fees on transactions!

This is such an interesting perspective 😅 In Malaysia wee are semi-cashless. We pay for a lot of things with our phones via QR codes. This has enabled a system where Asean countries allow you to pay for things without changing your physical currency when you are abroad. I think it's great 🤷‍♀️

This is getting very common in Asia.

Guess which nation is the person who posted this from??

🆕 blog! “Your phone is probably a CDO”

I'm not sure how many people know this, but I thought I'd share something I learned a few years ago when I worked for a mobile phone seller. Most modern smartphones are too expensive for people to purchase outright. At the most extreme end, the iPhone 14 Pro Max costs £1,2001. So a typical customer […]

Netflix loses a MILLION USERS! WHOA! THAT SOUNDS BAD!

It seems we forget that Netflix has to pay for that bandwidth though. Out of those million USERS, only a third of them were paying customers.

Netflix loses 300,000 paying subscribers, but also no longer has to cover the bandwidth on 600,000 others. I doubt that completely makes up the hit on profits, but it sure will have an impact on operating costs.

I wish this wasn't as clumsy, but from a business standpoint, it's not as dire as many are making it out to be.

Did you try asking Mitchell Baker for the money?

I just tried the demo of the GNU Taler payment system, and I think you should know about this.

It's not a crypto currency. It's not even a currency.

First, you send money to an exchange. Anyone could run an exchange, in theory. The exchange will then send the money to your Taler wallet. So far so good. The currency hasn't changed. It's still euros or dollars or whatever. You can then pay with that money. You can send money to anyone with a Taler wallet.

But what if they are with a different exchange? Well, here's the thing: Nobody is with any exchange. You never made an account with any exchange. So if your bro sends you 10 dollars for the pizza last night, you are entitled to that money that's still stored in the exchange and you can go withdraw it or spend it somewhere else.

So, after a while, you would have a balance that's composed of many different exchanges. The only catch is that you have to trust those exchanges. If someone wants to send you money that's at "MyDodgyExchange" then you should refuse it and tell them to use a more trustworthy exchange, because you can't be sure that "MyDodgyExchange" will actually turn your digital money back into physical money.

Overall, I think it's the most sensible approach to digital payment. I hope it will see some adoption soon.

Hang on I’ve just realised something – AI (well, AGI) and money are opposites

AGI is the opposite of money

The risk isn’t to jobs, it’s to money itself (and by extension work and by extension jobs)

Money and AGI are like matter and antimatter
