A reminder that less than two weeks ago, it was revealed that Trump solicited a $1 billion bribe from the energy industry, offering in return the gutting of environmental regulations.
A week ago, Big Journalism had already consigned this epic scandal to the memory bin.
Had Biden done anything remotely like that, I guarantee that it would still be among the top stories of the day -- and Congress, including Democrats, would be moving toward impeachment.
👉Trump promised to scrap climate laws if US oil bosses donated $1bn👈 – report
Trump promised to 20 executives at Mar-a-Lago dinner to increase oil drilling and reverse pollution rules among other pitches..."
"For their part, executives in big oil companies have been preparing for a possible Trump second term by drafting executive orders designed...
"Escape" what, The Guardian… fucking escape WHAT!?
I am getting so tired of reading supposedly sane media report on the never-ending string of war crimes committed by the Israeli army, like they are some mere misunderstandings…
Headline reads "Thousands of babies and toddlers falling sick from damp homes in Britain, NHS doctor warns."
Then "Nearly 31,000 children aged four or under admitted to hospital each year in England due to respiratory virus, with 80% developing acute bronchiolitis."
SNP Europe spokesman Alyn Smith said his party was now “the only major party committed to rejoining the EU”.
He said :
With Starmer, Sunak and Davey – the three bungling Brexiteers of UK politics – all throwing in the towel and ruling out any return to Europe, it’s clear independence is Scotland’s only route back to EU prosperity and the only escape from the long-term damage of Brexit.
Hearbreaking read by a Jewish journalist at #TheGuardian who has faced untenable amounts of #Antisemitic remarks from their collegues.
I'm sharing this (as left-leaning Jew who also reads the The Guardian) to highlight the reality of antisemitism on the left.
Also ---as anyone who reads me regularly knows, I am a frequent critic of the state of Israel and the ways it is conducting its war in Gaza. I say this to make it clear that calling out the reality that antisemitism is widespread among many leftist institutions, doesn't mean that I believe the criticism of #Israel is off-limits. But, I do believe that it is essential to use the same standard to call out #Hamas for its violations of #InternationalLaw, as well as to not attack Jewish or Muslim people (in Israel/Palestine or elsewhere) for who they are.
#eurovision / Following protesters in #Finland, #Iceland and #Norway, over one thousand Swedish artists and singers have signed a letter calling on the European Broadcasting Union to exclude Israel from the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.
“The fact that countries that place themselves above humanitarian law are welcomed to participate in international cultural events trivialises violations of international law and makes the suffering of the victims invisible,”
"The lavish lifestyles of the very #rich – the 1% – attract attention. But the 10% [paid more than about $40,000/yr] are responsible for half of all global emissions, making them key to ending the #climateCrisis."
"Transport, especially #car use, [but also] goods…, such as #furniture and #electronics… are 20-50 times higher for the richest 10%, and make up ≈⅓ emissions in most countries."
#Palestine / ‘They took our home, our land, everything’: Palestinians displaced by illegal settlers tell their stories
[…] Ori Givati, advocacy director with Breaking the Silence, a group founded by Israeli combat veterans to document military abuses in the occupied Palestinian territories, said the sanctions were a “good step in the right direction”. “I hope it’s just the beginning,” he added. “There should be dozens, if not hundreds, of settlers on those lists.”
"But doctors also reported treating a steady stream of #children, elderly people and others who were clearly not combatants with single bullet wounds to the head or chest.
Some of the physicians said that the types and locations of the wounds, and accounts of #Palestinians who brought children to the hospital, led them to believe the victims were directly targeted by #Israeli troops"
" #ErnestMoret, foreign rights manager for Éditions la Fabrique, was detained at #StPancras station in April 23 on his way to the London book fair.
He was held under section 7 of the #TerrorismAct 2000, and questioned by counter-terrorist officers about whether he had taken part in anti-government #demonstrations in #France and if he backed #EmmanuelMacron."
"...the world is split into “directionalists” and “destinationists”. Directionalists back any solution that takes us towards the final goal. In #climate, this means they support anything that puts a notable dent in emissions. Destinationists are less flexible: they have an ideal outcome in mind. They block and reject anything that doesn’t fit their perfect vision."
I see a lot of "destinationalists" on this site... I am a "directionalist".
