@arstechnica the only work that is needed is shutting off the server farms and taking a big ole' electromagnet to whatever backups they have of the code. Or maybe just dropping all of the drives and backup in salt water.
“It explains why you get pathologized and called everything from a doomer to a snowflake for caring about anything but yourself” https://www.okdoomer.io/thebadguys/
@taylorlorenz I've found over the last few years that I've gotten good and lying and putting on a happy face. I hate that dishonesty of how I live my life.
I bet if you formed an electric car company made only of people who previously worked for Tesla then quit in disgust, you could make a really good electric car company
As an undergrad, I sent one of my biology professors a thank you card at the end of the semester bc I really enjoyed his class. He was a plant guy & it had a smiling sunflower on it with a text box that said “Thanks.”
At the time, I remember worrying he would think it was a weird thing to do.
25 years later, now sitting on the other side of things, I’m really glad I did that bc I’d be delighted to be on the receiving end.
Always let people know what their contribution means to you.
@Sheril When I was in college I did not like my Calculus I and II instructor because the class was quite difficult. Looking back on it, those were the best classes I had. When I started my faculty position I looked to see if he was still teaching to thank him for teaching a tough class. Sadly he retired.
@arstechnica who actually believes what Muskie says given his poor track record: Telsa "Self Driving", any "mission" to Mars or the Moon, underground "roads" in Vegas, and the dumpster fire formerly known as Twitter
Something like 75%-80% of Democratic voters support a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, including a strong majority of Jewish and Muslim Democrats, but the Biden administration and many Congressional Democrats could apparently care less, and that small pro-genocide minority stridently insist Biden is under no obligation to listen to the Democratic majority even if it may cost him "the most important election of our lives" against Trump.
Just one newspaper headline, that illustrates that Europe and Ukraine are on their own and can't count on the US. How can we expect Ukraine not to hit non-civilian targets like refineries, in response to Russia hitting civilian targets in Ukraine constantly ? #geopolitics#USA#EU#Ukraine#Russia@geopolitics
I just love that the GOP Response to the SOTU just had to clear the bar of "act like a normal person" and they couldn't find a single person in the party who could do it.
Interesting. The more you know about #climate change the less anxious you are, because you also know about the options for tackling it. Educating the public works.
@chgowiz@petergleick unfortunately I must agree that we are not going to "solve" the problem. Indeed, I think that many western nations, led by the US, will continue to ignore the problem for the next 10-20 years.
A bill advancing through the Washington legislature would make neighborhood cafes legal by-right in all residential areas in every city and town in the state.
A Quebec man who posted conspiracy theories online that forest fires were being deliberately set by the government to trick people into believing in #ClimateChange has pleaded guilty to starting 14 fires himself that forced hundreds of people from their homes.
@gedeonm@AlisonCreekside@CStamp And while spending his life in prison that they should make him knit sweaters to be given to poor indigenous peoples most impacted by climate change.
@mrbruno@Brandi_Buchman I don't get how his supporters can possibly see him as "strong" or "successful" when all he does it talk about how unfairly he is treated.
“No you see, we should be able to train our AI models on your work without compensating you so we can create similar works so you’re no longer needed — what part of this aren’t you getting?”
“Special counsel #JackSmith, who is overseeing the prosecution of #Trump in two federal cases, was the target of an attempted swatting at his Maryland residence on Christmas Day.
According to two law enforcement sources, someone called 911 and said that Smith had shot his wife at the address where Smith lives.”
I would very conservatively guess that 80-90% of all online “courses" will be entirely LLM generated from this point on. Be very careful before you spend your $ folks.
@Daojoan the college I teach at has a "Center of Faculty Excellence" that keeps sending out emails about LLM teaching. Same with a bunch of textbook publishers. These emails helped me to learn that Outlook has a "block" feature. Not quite as nice as sending the email to /dev/null but it works.
The SpaceX explosion is nothing but disturbing, there is no “success” in creating thousands of tons of pollution. We absolutely do not know if the atmosphere can handle these repeated explosions of tons of metals. SpaceX is not making life “multiplanetary,” instead they may be putting life on the fast-track to being planet-less
@sidereal@gwozniak@carlysagan Yeah. I can say all sorts of things about Bezos and Zuckerberg, but they both seem to actually be slightly better than Musk
