Google’s “AI Overview” can give false, misleading, and dangerous answers

From glue-on-pizza recipes to recommending "blinker fluid," Google's AI sourcing needs work.

Pepperbike,

@arstechnica the only work that is needed is shutting off the server farms and taking a big ole' electromagnet to whatever backups they have of the code. Or maybe just dropping all of the drives and backup in salt water.

I bet if you formed an electric car company made only of people who previously worked for Tesla then quit in disgust, you could make a really good electric car company

Pepperbike,

@mcc if they quit in disgust it would also say something very good about their character and ethical standing in the world.

As an undergrad, I sent one of my biology professors a thank you card at the end of the semester bc I really enjoyed his class. He was a plant guy & it had a smiling sunflower on it with a text box that said “Thanks.”

At the time, I remember worrying he would think it was a weird thing to do.

25 years later, now sitting on the other side of things, I’m really glad I did that bc I’d be delighted to be on the receiving end.

Always let people know what their contribution means to you.

Pepperbike,

@Sheril When I was in college I did not like my Calculus I and II instructor because the class was quite difficult. Looking back on it, those were the best classes I had. When I started my faculty position I looked to see if he was still teaching to thank him for teaching a tough class. Sadly he retired.

Elon Musk: AI will be smarter than any human around the end of next year

While Musk says superintelligence is coming soon, one critic says prediction is "batsh*t crazy."

@arstechnica who actually believes what Muskie says given his poor track record: Telsa "Self Driving", any "mission" to Mars or the Moon, underground "roads" in Vegas, and the dumpster fire formerly known as Twitter

Something like 75%-80% of Democratic voters support a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, including a strong majority of Jewish and Muslim Democrats, but the Biden administration and many Congressional Democrats could apparently care less, and that small pro-genocide minority stridently insist Biden is under no obligation to listen to the Democratic majority even if it may cost him "the most important election of our lives" against Trump.

Pepperbike,

@gwynnion @waitworry I remember hearing that reasoning in 2016 and frankly I get really strong 2016 vibes from the current election cycle.

I would very conservatively guess that 80-90% of all online “courses" will be entirely LLM generated from this point on. Be very careful before you spend your $ folks.

    Pepperbike,

@Daojoan the college I teach at has a "Center of Faculty Excellence" that keeps sending out emails about LLM teaching. Same with a bunch of textbook publishers. These emails helped me to learn that Outlook has a "block" feature. Not quite as nice as sending the email to /dev/null but it works.

The SpaceX explosion is nothing but disturbing, there is no “success” in creating thousands of tons of pollution. We absolutely do not know if the atmosphere can handle these repeated explosions of tons of metals. SpaceX is not making life “multiplanetary,” instead they may be putting life on the fast-track to being planet-less

    Pepperbike,
