@IzzyData @yogthos lower cost is important if wireless applications were to expand, better coverage is important too. It was little advertised that 5G infrastructure was supposed to cost less than 4G infrastructure because it broke the industry model of 5G being the new shiny that you have to pay $X more a month… the same model that killed 3D movies.

Would you be in favour of algorithmic content if you controlled the criteria? Eg. You control the frequency, the content,the chronology,etc.

UP8, (edited )
@UP8@mastodon.social avatar

@mike I was telling people in 2001 that RSS was doomed because it didn't have algorithmic feeds (e.g. the real value of RSS is when can you subscribe to more than you can read.) This year I built YOShInOn which shows me a great feed of about 5% of what it ingests; productizing it could be tough because it takes about 1000 judgements to create a good perference model and I think most people would run out of patience around 5.

ESPN+ just aired three commercials in a row advertising that they have soccer games. Why?

@CityHoosier Because you can get really great soccer games (UK Premier League) on the weekend on Peacock for a lot less money

Awesome article by @hbuchel discussing why the current state of the web isn't great.

Over the past decade, I've noticed a decline in web design that's a tad disappointing. It feels like a lot of overly serious "developers" have prioritized function over aesthetics to such an extent that functionality has been compromised due to a lack of visual appeal.

Nowadays, almost every website seems to have the same generic look - a sea of whiteness with that corporate Memphis vibe, attempting to showcase diversity but lacking imagination and creativity.

I genuinely believe that one contributing factor to this issue is the increasing centralization of the web, where the same gatekeepers consistently make the same mistakes.

Although the Fediverse currently lacks good web design, I have high hopes that its open-source nature will attract incredibly talented web designers who will bring innovation to the table. I really wish for a visually pleasing and user-friendly social web to thrive.

@atomicpoet @hbuchel it is the culture that thinks whitespace is 90% of what is important and the content is 10% -- like that blog; if there was something like a class action lawsuit in reverse I'd like a penny from each of them to pay for all the space on my big monitor that is filled with whitespace instead of content

@hbuchel @atomicpoet maybe only 2% of us are still browsing on a desktop but I'd like to see more content than the postage stamp everyone else is seeing on their phone

@atomicpoet @hbuchel when Win 8 came out I had a computer with a 4:3 monitor in portrait that was in a corner of the house that I thought was so stylin’ but I’ve found that with wider aspect ratio monitors it doesn’t work so well

I recently got quite some flak for discussing what satellites burning up in the atmosphere after their planned lifetime of 6 years could do to the stratosphere. Adding tons of aluminium and other elements as fine aerosol particles. Well. New research has just been published:

Mutual assured destruction is clearly the motivation for car buying these days.

Ultimately, we're all going to have cars that fire missiles.

UP8,
@UP8@mastodon.social avatar

@davidho I’m not sure if people really want big cars in the US or if that is the only thing the dealers will sell; try to buy a new small car and they are all out of stock, there is some excuse about how the factory washed out in a flood but there are 200 SUV’s made in the same factory in a row unsold. They’ve got one used small car that somebody traded in that morning, whenever they get one it doesn’t last two days…

@LaNaehForaday they had a presentation about the health of a creek that passes through my town and talked about how if you went a bit deep you would find 10,000 year old water

UP8,
@UP8@mastodon.social avatar

@LaNaehForaday There is an “artesian” aquifer in that area which is sealed so that it builds up pressure and comes out of the ground with some force at a point not far from the creek, the town is called “Slaterville Springs” because of the spring

UP8,
@UP8@mastodon.social avatar

@LaNaehForaday at my farm we have a high-quality spring which sometimes dries out at the peak of the summer at the top of our hayfield and we have a backup well of the conventional sort that tastes like rotten eggs in comparison

@eniko The motto of Windows users has long been “who moved my cheese?” when I was sysadmining 7 versions of Windows it was quite annoying to deal with all the little details of where they hid settings. Adobe in the other hand has done a good job of keeping creative cloud relevant and rarely breaking features I use.
